A Swiss woman who had been receiving treatment for Ebola in Abuja was medically evacuated to Switzerland early on Monday, accompanied by her husband, a Swiss diplomat. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Pate confirmed that the patient’s condition had improved, describing her as stable, conscious and able to communicate. He added that she could still be infectious, so strict protocols remain in place.
The evacuation was carried out because both the patient and her husband are Swiss citizens. Swiss authorities will now take over her treatment and monitor her husband, who has shown no symptoms. Nigerian officials continue to track 52 people who had contact with the patient.
Upon her return to Abuja from Uganda, the female patient was confirmed to have the infection. Nigerian officials have still not established the manner in which she acquired the pathogen. The World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, said the evacuation was prompted by the patients’ nationality and that local medical teams had stabilised her after the acute phase of the disease.
Background
The patient is Nigeria’s first case in the present Ebola outbreak. The outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May, with more than 9,900 cases and 4,800 deaths reported by the Congolese health ministry. The World Health Organization has described the current outbreak as the fastest‑spreading Ebola outbreak on record, and it is projected to surpass the death toll of the 2014‑2016 West African outbreak.
Earlier this month, Kenya confirmed its first case of Ebola, recording nine cases and two deaths. The first patients in Nigeria and Kenya both travelled through Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport on 3 October. Uganda had earlier documented instances of the disease before subsequently announcing it was no longer present in the country.
Why it matters
The evacuation of the patient and her husband means that Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases. However, the 52 contacts being monitored remain a potential source of further transmission. The case underscores the rapid spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola beyond the DRC and the importance of vigilant containment measures.
What happens next
Nigerian authorities will maintain containment protocols and continue to monitor the 52 contacts. Switzerland will oversee the patient’s ongoing treatment and the husband’s health. No further dates or decisions were announced in the available sources.
