Evacuation of Nigeria’s lone Ebola patient

On Monday morning, the 42‑year‑old Ugandan‑born wife of a Swiss diplomat, who is Nigeria’s first Ebola case in more than a decade, was airlifted from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Switzerland for further treatment. Her husband, who has remained asymptomatic, accompanied her on the flight. The evacuation was carried out by an air ambulance with the approval of Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

Pate announced the departure on his X account, noting that the patient was clinically much improved, stable, conscious and able to communicate. Laboratory test results were reported to be approaching baseline levels. However, he cautioned that the improvement did not mean the patient was no longer infectious and that strict public‑health protocols remained in place.

The Swiss foreign ministry and Uganda’s health ministry have not yet responded to requests for comment. The patient’s travel history, which shows she had not visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, is under investigation by scientists looking for a link to the Bundibugyo species of Ebola.

Background

Nigeria’s first Ebola case since 2015 was confirmed on 22 October 2026, when a woman in Lagos tested positive for the virus. The case was identified as the Bundibugyo species, a strain that had previously caused outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient was the wife of a Swiss diplomat stationed in Abuja and had travelled through Entebbe airport in Uganda on 3 October.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported on Sunday that the number of contacts linked to the index case had risen to 53. Contact tracing and isolation measures were immediately put in place, and the patient was admitted to a dedicated treatment facility in Abuja.

Why it matters

The evacuation underscores the seriousness of the outbreak and the need for rapid international cooperation. Nigeria’s health ministry confirmed that all public‑health measures remain in place to contain the imported virus, urging citizens to stay vigilant and seek information from credible sources.

The case has prompted scrutiny of travel routes and potential transmission pathways. Scientists are investigating whether the patient’s infection could be linked to the first Ebola case in Kenya, a man who also travelled through Entebbe airport on 3 October.

The patient’s clinical improvement is a positive sign, but the possibility that she remains infectious highlights the ongoing risk to healthcare workers and the public. Strict protocols during the evacuation and treatment are designed to prevent further spread.

What happens next

According to Pate, the government will provide further updates later that Monday after the patient and her spouse had arrived safely in Switzerland. The patient will receive advanced care in a Swiss facility equipped to handle Ebola cases. Nigeria’s health authorities will continue to monitor contacts and enforce containment measures.

The case remains a focal point for international health agencies, including the World Health Organization and Africa CDC, as they assess the potential for wider spread and the effectiveness of current containment strategies.
