Nigeria confirmed on 20 October 2026 that a woman in Abuja had tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, marking the country’s first case of the disease in more than ten years. The patient is a Swiss national, married to a member of staff at Switzerland’s embassy in the Nigerian capital. She had arrived in Abuja on a flight from Uganda and was hospitalised at a private clinic for about a week before the diagnosis was confirmed. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate announced that the woman had been isolated and that 44 individuals who may have been exposed were placed under observation.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs clarified that the woman, who was born in Uganda, did not travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with her husband, contradicting earlier statements from Ugandan officials. According to the Swiss ministry, the infection likely occurred during the couple’s recent trip to Uganda roughly two weeks before symptoms appeared. The husband remains in isolation but has shown no symptoms. The embassy’s other staff – eight Swiss nationals and seventeen local employees – are reported to be in good health and, following consultations with the Nigerian health ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO), do not require isolation.

Background

The current outbreak of the Bundibugyo species began in the northeastern part of the DRC in May 2026 and subsequently spread to neighbouring Uganda, where twenty confirmed cases and two deaths were recorded before the outbreak was declared over in August. Nigeria now becomes the fourth African nation affected, after the DRC, Uganda and Kenya. WHO figures as of 20 October indicated more than 9,700 confirmed cases across the region, with 4,690 deaths. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has reported a similar death toll of about 4,700.

The virus is known for lacking specific vaccines or treatments, and the Bundibugyo strain is the same one driving the outbreak in the DRC. Nigeria’s Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) had already introduced enhanced Ebola screening and emergency response protocols at international airports in May 2026 to detect and contain potential imported cases.

Why it matters

The identification of an Ebola case in Nigeria raises immediate public‑health concerns, prompting the activation of contact‑tracing procedures for the 44 identified contacts. The case also underscores the trans‑regional nature of the outbreak, linking Nigeria to the broader epidemic that has already affected three other African countries. The involvement of diplomatic staff adds a diplomatic dimension, as Swiss authorities are weighing the possibility of repatriating the patient to Switzerland for treatment. Both the Nigerian health ministry and WHO have been consulted on isolation requirements, and the Swiss ministry has indicated that embassy staff, apart from the patient and her husband, do not need to be isolated.

Travel and trade could be impacted, given that the FAAN’s screening measures are already in place and may be intensified. The Africa CDC and WHO continue to monitor the situation, noting that they have not received confirmed information that the patient travelled to the DRC, a point contested by earlier Ugandan statements.

What happens next

Swiss officials are considering the potential repatriation of the patient, while Nigerian health authorities continue to monitor her condition and manage the identified contacts. Ongoing investigations aim to pinpoint the exact source of infection, with WHO and Africa CDC awaiting further confirmation on travel histories. The situation remains fluid, and both countries have pledged to cooperate closely to contain any further spread of the virus.
