Military operations in the Northwest
Military personnel from the Joint Task Force, North-West, conducting Operation Fansan Yamma, eliminated eight alleged insurgents and liberated three hostages during synchronized operations spanning Katsina, Kaduna, and Zamfara. The military confirmed that these operations were conducted between Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026. In the course of these confrontations, the forces also seized an AK-47 assault rifle, three homemade firearms, three motorbikes, machetes, and various amulets. Captain Tamuno Sinivie, the Media Information Officer for the task force, disclosed these details in a statement released on Monday.
The first engagement took place in Katsina State on Saturday. Forces based in Sector One attended to an emergency alert from cultivators at Machika Dam within Sabuwa Local Government Area after intelligence indicated the presence of militants. Upon arrival, the soldiers engaged the suspected terrorists in a gun battle, resulting in the death of two assailants while others fled the scene. During this operation, troops rescued Mr Suleiman Umar, a 42-year-old man who had been kidnapped by the group. A follow-up sweep of the vicinity yielded the discovery of an AK-47 with a loaded magazine alongside a motorbike.
Details of the engagements
On that same date in Kaduna State, Sector One units, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force, prevented a planned insurgent attack in Ungwan Iya, located in Igabi Local Government Area. The military stated that they responded to a distress call regarding an attack on Ungwan Mallami village, where assailants had abducted two individuals. While pursuing the fleeing suspects, the troops came under attack but responded with superior firepower, neutralising six suspected terrorists. The remaining suspects fled in disarray. This specific action led to the confiscation of three homemade weapons, two motorbikes, machetes, and various amulets.
On Sunday, October 25, troops from Sector Two conducted operations in Bagega, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State. During surveillance activities, soldiers spotted suspected terrorists and immediately launched a fighting patrol. The suspects fled upon seeing the advancing troops, abandoning two kidnapped victims. The rescued individuals were identified as Shehu Chete, aged 40, and Bugu Bedi, aged 25, both of whom are indigenes of Kebbi State. The rescued individuals were promptly transported to Bagega Clinic for treatment, after which they were shifted to a military installation for further evaluation and subsequent release to their relatives.
Background
Operation Fansan Yamma is a military initiative aimed at securing the North-West region of Nigeria, which has faced persistent security challenges from armed groups and bandits. The Joint Task Force, North-West, comprises various military sectors tasked with maintaining order in the region. The use of the Civilian Joint Task Force in the Kaduna operation highlights the collaborative approach often employed in these areas, where local security groups assist regular troops. The recovery of weapons, including locally fabricated firearms and motorcycles, indicates the equipment typically used by these non-state armed groups in the region.
Why it matters
These operations directly impact the safety of civilians in the North-West, particularly farmers and residents of rural areas who are frequently targeted by kidnappers and terrorists. The rescue of three individuals, including two from Kebbi State, underscores the cross-border nature of the security threats in the region. The neutralisation of eight suspected terrorists and the seizure of weapons aim to degrade the operational capacity of these groups. The military stated that troops have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further incidents. The recovery of specific items, such as the AK-47 and fabricated guns, provides intelligence on the armament level of the groups operating in Sabuwa, Igabi, and Anka Local Government Areas.
