Rescue of kidnapped residents The Joint Task Force North West, operating under the codename Operation Fansan Yamma, responded to a distress call on 16 October 2026 from the Gamji community in Sabuwa Local Government Area, Katsina State. According to Lt‑Col Aliyu Danja, the task force’s Media Information Officer, the call reported the abduction of 27 residents – 15 men and 12 women – by armed militants.
Sector 1 troops mobilised quickly, tracking the perpetrators along the Gangare‑Kamba axis. Engaging the suspects with superior firepower, the soldiers forced the militants to release the hostages and retreat in disarray. All 27 individuals were recovered unharmed, subsequently profiled and handed over to local community leaders for reunification with their families.
The operation was described by the task force as part of a continued offensive aimed at denying terrorist groups freedom of movement and protecting vulnerable communities across the region. The Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North West publicly praised the troops for their rapid response and effectiveness.
Motorcycle recovery during patrol Later the same day, a fighting patrol near Kurba village in Kankara Local Government Area encountered three motorcycles ridden by suspected terrorists. Upon sighting the patrol, the militants fled, abandoning one of the motorcycles. The recovered vehicle was seized as part of the broader effort to disrupt the logistical capabilities of insurgent groups.
Both incidents were presented as evidence of the task force’s sustained operational posture and its commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in Katsina, Zamfara and neighbouring states.
Wider security implications The successful rescue and equipment recovery underscore the Joint Task Force North West’s focus on proactive engagement rather than reactive measures. By swiftly responding to distress calls and maintaining a visible presence in high‑risk areas, the force aims to deter future kidnappings and limit the operational space available to terrorist elements.
Local authorities and community leaders have welcomed the outcomes, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between security forces and civilians. The task force reiterated its pledge to maintain pressure on insurgent networks and to ensure the safety of residents throughout its area of responsibility.
