The Nigerian Army has announced the rescue of 16 abductees following a military operation in Niger State. The intervention took place on 5 November, when troops from the Army's 18 Brigade conducted an ambush along a route in Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA). The operation was triggered by intelligence indicating the movement of suspected terrorists from Mashegu LGA towards Rijiyan Nagwamatse in Kontagora LGA. During the engagement, soldiers neutralised an unspecified number of armed men who had previously abducted residents. Beyond the liberation of the captives, the armed forces seized substantial materiel, which comprised two AK-47 firearms, seven clips, three RPG high-explosive anti-personnel munitions, various types of ammunition, 33 motorbikes, and a sum of4.1 million naira in currency. According to the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 18 Brigade, Adebayo Adewumi, the rescued victims were provided with first aid before being handed over to authorities for reunification with their families.
Background
This operation is part of a broader series of security interventions in the region. In a separate event occurring on 3 November, soldiers blocked the path of alleged insurgents traveling from Makuku village in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State toward Tungan Kawo in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State. An exchange of gunfire followed, compelling the armed individuals to withdraw into an adjacent woodland while suffering from bullet injuries. Following a thorough sweep, the defense forces secured five motorbikes, a cellular device, and 644,300 naira. The Commander of the 18 Brigade commended the troops for their conduct and urged them to sustain operations against criminal groups within the brigade's area of responsibility. These ongoing military activities are unfolding amidst a rise in instability within Niger State. On 31 October, suspected outlaws kidnapped 14 students and their instructor from a Quranic school located in Tungan-Bako village, Rafi Local Government Area, during a maize harvest. The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that joint security teams had initiated rescue efforts. This followed the abduction of 47 farmers in Tugan-Rimi, Mariga LGA, on 27 September. Furthermore, on 21 August, gunmen abducted more than 500 worshippers from mosques in Dekara and four other communities, with families reporting no contact from the abductors. Previously, on 21 November 2025, 230 learners and personnel were taken from St Mary's Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, only to be liberated after a period of captivity lasting several weeks.
Why it matters
The recurring nature of these kidnappings has compelled inhabitants in sections of Borgu, Mariga, Mashegu, and Rijau Local Government Areas to abandon their dwellings and leave their crops in the fields, thereby disturbing regional farming and social cohesion. The recovery of weapons and cash by the military highlights the operational capacity of the armed groups involved. The 18 Brigade's continued engagement aims to mitigate the threat posed by these criminal groups, which have targeted farming communities and educational institutions. The rescue of the 16 victims on 5 November represents a tangible outcome of the intelligence-led operations designed to protect civilians in the affected local government areas. The military has placed the recovered items in custody for further action, indicating ongoing investigations into the networks responsible for the kidnappings.
What happens next
The armed forces have declared their intention to maintain combat activities against illicit organizations within the brigade's designated operational zone. The confiscated materials are currently held by the military for subsequent procedural steps. Joint security teams continue to work on resolving the earlier abduction of 14 pupils and their teacher in Rafi LGA, as confirmed by the Niger State Police Command. The Army's public relations office has highlighted the commendation from the 18 Brigade Commander, signalling a continued focus on maintaining pressure on armed groups in the region.
