On 26 October 2026, forces from the Maritime Component of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, came into contact with a hostile group within Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The operation, described as intelligence‑led, was prompted by reports that criminal elements masquerading as herders had entered the area from Nasarawa State. Upon arrival, the soldiers came under fire, returned fire, and forced the attackers to retreat. No soldiers were injured during the clash.

Lieutenant Ahmad (also spelled Ahamdu) Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the operation, stated that the confrontation led to the seizure of two AK-47 rifles, four empty AK-47 magazines, three mobile phones, a National Identification Number (NIN) document belonging to a man named Umar Yusuf, eight calves, and a cash sum of ₦20. The force commander, Major General Moses Kolo Gara, who also serves as the General Officer Commanding the 5th Division of the Nigerian Army, praised the troops for their vigilance and swift response. He urged continued cooperation with local communities and emphasized the importance of intelligence‑driven actions to curb criminal activity in the Joint Operations Area.

Background

Operation Whirl Stroke is a joint task force comprising elements of the Nigerian Army’s Maritime Component, tasked with securing volatile regions across the country. Recent intelligence indicated that individuals posing as herders had crossed state lines from Nasarawa into Benue, a pattern consistent with previous incidents of armed groups exploiting pastoral movements to conduct raids. The operation in Guma follows a series of security deployments aimed at curbing such incursions, with local residents encouraged to report suspicious movements to authorities.

Why it matters

The recovery of firearms and ammunition highlights the ongoing proliferation of small arms in Nigeria’s rural zones, where armed groups often target livestock and civilians. By seizing weapons and cash, the army not only removes immediate threats but also disrupts the financial incentives that fuel these attacks. The eight calves recovered underscore the economic impact of such raids on pastoral communities, whose livelihoods depend heavily on livestock. Moreover, the successful, casualty‑free engagement reinforces confidence in intelligence‑led policing and may encourage further community cooperation with security forces.

What happens next

Major General Gara called for sustained collaboration between the troops and local residents, urging the public to continue providing credible intelligence. The statement did not specify any further operations, but the emphasis on intelligence‑driven tactics suggests that similar deployments may be planned should new threats emerge in the region. No additional statements from other agencies or opposing parties were reported.
