Standard Chartered Nigeria takes home International Banking Excellence Award

Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited received the International Banking Excellence Award during the 2026 Banking and Other Financial Institutions (BAFI) Awards ceremony in Lagos on 27 October 2026. The ceremony was organised by BusinessDay and took place in the city’s financial district. The award recognises the bank’s ability to combine a strong international network with deep local market knowledge, enabling it to connect Nigerian clients to global capital and opportunities. Ayodeji Adelagun, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, said the accolade reflected the strength of the franchise, the dedication of staff and the trust clients place in the bank. He added that Nigeria remains a key market and that the bank will continue to support clients’ ambitions, deliver innovative solutions and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Background

Standard Chartered has been active in Nigeria for many years, supporting a range of investment, trade and infrastructure projects. In September 2026, the institution acted as Financial Adviser, Global Coordinator, Lead Arranger and Bookrunner for a US$1.1 billion financing that underpins the IMA Gas Development Project. The project is a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Amni International and aims to develop gas resources in Nigeria. Earlier in 2026, Standard Chartered partnered with the International Finance Corporation to launch a US$300 million risk‑sharing facility. The facility was designed to strengthen supply chains and support business growth across eight African markets, including Nigeria, and covers sectors such as agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing. Standard Chartered acted as the originator of the facility.

Why it matters

The award highlights Standard Chartered’s continued influence on Nigeria’s financial landscape. By securing large financing deals and risk‑sharing facilities, the bank facilitates capital flow into critical sectors, supporting economic activity and job creation. The recognition also signals confidence from the market in the bank’s ability to deliver complex financial solutions.

What happens next

The sources do not provide specific information on forthcoming actions or dates following the award. The bank’s recent projects suggest it will maintain its focus on supporting infrastructure and supply‑chain initiatives across Africa.
