Clearance operation in Sokoto State On 15 October 2026, soldiers from the Joint Task Force North West’s Sector 2, operating under the banner of Operation Fansan Yamma, engaged armed militants in two separate firefights in Sokoto State. The first clash took place in the Waria Forest, where forces eliminated one suspect and retrieved two AK‑47 rifles together with two motorcycles. A second encounter occurred at Sarma Village, resulting in the death of another militant while the remaining assailants fled, leaving behind additional equipment. Subsequent searches of the area yielded six more motorcycles, two further AK‑47 rifles, four magazines, 23 rounds of ammunition and a radio communication device, bringing the total haul to four rifles and eight motorcycles.
Reported casualties and equipment seized According to Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, the operation also produced other material such as ammunition, communication gear and assorted items that could be used to support insurgent activities. While one source described the adversaries as “Lakurawa terrorists,” another referred to them simply as militants, indicating a consensus that the group was armed and operating in the region. The recovered weapons and vehicles represent a notable reduction in the group’s firepower and mobility, according to the military statements.
Strategic significance and community involvement The army framed the operation as part of an ongoing campaign to dismantle terrorist networks across the north‑west, disrupt their logistical capabilities and restore security for local communities. Danja highlighted the importance of public cooperation, urging residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies. The statement underscored the commitment of the troops to maintain peace and stability throughout the Joint Operations Area.
Wider security context Operation Fansan Yamma has been active in Sokoto and neighbouring states, conducting regular patrols and ambushes aimed at curbing insurgent activity. The recent successes, including the seizure of weapons and the neutralisation of two militants, are presented as evidence of the operation’s effectiveness in weakening the operational capacity of the targeted group.
The military’s continued presence and the reported cooperation from civilians are intended to deter further attacks and support the broader objective of lasting peace in the north‑west region of Nigeria.
