Adetunji Abudu, a 34-year-old man from Lagos, Nigeria, has been arrested at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island, Abudu was apprehended while trying to cross into the country from Istanbul, Turkey. The arrest marks the resolution of a case in which Abudu had previously fled the country in 2019 to avoid prosecution for his alleged role in a large-scale financial crime scheme.

The charges stem from a superseding indictment that names Abudu as one of six defendants. The prosecution alleges that the group operated fraud schemes from Nigeria that targeted elderly Americans. Perpetrators employed tactics such as romantic frauds over the internet, bogus lottery schemes, fictitious property advertisements, and deceptive parcel delivery services to trick their targets. According to the US Attorney’s Office, millions of dollars were obtained through these illicit activities. The funds were allegedly laundered through bank accounts and businesses located in the United States, specifically in Rhode Island and Idaho, before significant portions of the proceeds were sent back to Nigeria. The indictment further states that members of the conspiracy used the stolen money to purchase vehicles, which were subsequently shipped overseas.

Background

Abudu’s flight from justice began in 2019, following a court-authorized search of his residence in North Providence, Rhode Island, conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The search was part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged money-laundering conspiracy. After Abudu departed for Nigeria, the remaining five co-defendants faced legal proceedings. Dotun Olawale Alonge, Oluwaseyi Akintol, Samson Ikotun, Olabode Shaba, and Oladipup Shodipu each admitted to guilt regarding allegations of conspiring to launder money. Their sentences varied, ranging from time already served to a maximum of 42 months in prison.

The FBI led the investigation, supported by the US Postal Inspection Service and law enforcement agencies in Tallmadge, Ohio, and Moscow, Idaho. Assistant US Attorney John P. McAdams is currently prosecuting the case. The US Attorney’s Office emphasized in its statement that an indictment is merely an accusation and that Abudu is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Why it matters

This case highlights the transnational nature of financial crimes targeting vulnerable populations, specifically elderly Americans. The alleged scheme involved complex money-laundering networks that moved funds across international borders, utilizing businesses in multiple US states before transferring wealth to Nigeria. The arrest of Abudu is significant as it concludes the pursuit of the last remaining defendant in this specific indictment. The involvement of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and local police, underscores the coordinated effort required to dismantle such cross-border criminal operations. The sentences handed down to the other co-defendants indicate the serious legal consequences associated with participating in money laundering conspiracies in the United States.

What happens next

Abudu is currently in custody following his arrest at the airport. The US Attorney’s Office has not detailed specific upcoming court dates or trial schedules in the provided statement. The case will proceed through the federal court system in the District of Rhode Island, where Abudu will face the charges outlined in the superseding indictment. The prosecution will present evidence of the alleged fraud and money-laundering activities, while Abudu retains the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.
