South African woman and US‑based grandmother seized with cocaine and synthetic cannabis at Lagos airport
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested a 34‑year‑old South African carrying 36.65 kg of cocaine and a 62‑year‑old Nigerian‑American grandmother with 9.45 kg of loud at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in early October, part of a wider drug‑interdiction effort across the country.

Operatives of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) detained two high‑profile suspects at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos during separate interdiction operations in early October 2026. The initial detention occurred on 7 October and concerned Qhina Beauty, a 34-year-old South African national who was trying to catch a Qatar Airways service to South Africa with a stopover in Doha. Inspectors found 30 blocks of cocaine weighing a combined 36 units inside the two suitcases she was carrying.65 kilograms, wrapped in cellophane tape, laced with dried pepper and divided into seven parcels.
The second arrest occurred on 21 October when Anetor Gloria Ubong, a 62‑year‑old Nigerian‑American grandmother and Texas‑based realtor, arrived on a United Airlines flight from Houston. NDLEA officers inspected her two checked‑in boxes and recovered 18 parcels of loud – a high‑grade synthetic cannabis – weighing 9.45 kilograms, concealed with gift‑wrapping paper.
Background
The NDLEA disclosed the arrests in a statement released by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi. According to the agency, Beauty arrived in Nigeria on 30 September specifically to collect the cocaine consignment. She told investigators that another South African woman recruited her, promising a payment of R20,000 upon successful delivery. Beauty also identified two other alleged members of the syndicate: a contact based in the United States and a Lagos‑based car dealer.
Following days of monitoring his home in Shasha, investigators apprehended 46-year-old car salesman Uchenna Victor Umunnakwe on 14 October at Apple Junction on Ago Palace Way in Lagos. Umunnakwe confessed to picking up Beauty at the airport and initially staying with her at the Santiago Hotel in Amuwo-Odofin before relocating her to the Cynarisso Hotel close to the airport prior to her flight.
Ubong, a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, stated that a box of loud arrived at her American residence via her daughter and the man’s future brother-in-law, meant to be forwarded to her daughter’s fiancé, known only as Jibola, in Nigeria. The NDLEA report additionally highlighted that the agency confiscated significant amounts of illegal narcotics during distinct operations in Kano, Lagos, Bauchi, Niger, Edo, Ondo, Taraba, Oyo, and Delta states, in addition to the two aforementioned arrests.
Why it matters
The seizures represent some of the largest single‑batch drug interceptions recorded at Lagos airport in recent years. The 36.65 kg of cocaine and 9.45 kg of loud together illustrate the scale of trans‑national trafficking networks using Nigeria as a transit or distribution hub. The involvement of individuals with dual nationality and connections to the United States and South Africa underscores the cross‑border nature of the operations.
The arrests have immediate implications for public safety and the domestic drug market. Loud, a potent synthetic cannabis, has been linked to increased health emergencies in Nigeria, while cocaine remains a high‑value illicit commodity fueling organized crime. By disrupting the supply chain at a major entry point, the NDLEA aims to curtail the flow of these substances into Nigerian communities and beyond.
The agency’s broader crackdown, which included the seizure of diazepam, tramadol, skunk and large volumes of other narcotics in Lagos and other states, signals an intensified enforcement posture. The operation against Eletu Rasheedat, a 41‑year‑old arrested on 23 October, yielded over 5,800 diazepam pills, 780 tramadol tablets, 3.7 kg of skunk and more than 230 litres of skuchies, further highlighting the diversity of substances targeted.
What happens next
NDLEA officials indicated that investigations into the wider syndicate are ongoing. The agency has not disclosed further details about forthcoming prosecutions, but the arrests of Beauty, Ubong and Umunnakwe suggest that additional suspects linked to the United States and South African contacts may be pursued. The statement also mentioned continued operations in multiple states, implying that further seizures and arrests are expected as the agency follows leads generated from the Lagos airport interceptions.
The public and international partners are likely to monitor the outcomes of these cases, given the involvement of foreign nationals and the potential impact on Nigeria’s reputation as a transit point for narcotics. The NDLEA’s actions demonstrate a coordinated effort to dismantle complex drug trafficking networks operating across continents.
