According to the Nigerian Air Force, the service logged over 6,100 flight hours and carried out more than 2,900 missions to bolster national security efforts from November 2025 through September 2026. According to a statement issued on Sunday, the service consumed close to 10 million litres of Jet A-1 aviation fuel during this period. The figures were released by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, ahead of the first anniversary of the tenure of Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, which is scheduled for October 30.

Background

The report specifies that the activities conducted within that timeframe included targeted bombing runs, armed scouting, monitoring, and direct aerial assistance to troops. The main goal of these actions was to weaken enemy groups, restrict their mobility, and improve the performance of land-based units. Ejodame noted that these activities were guided by actionable intelligence, defined objectives, and rigorous assessments of operational outcomes. He stressed that the priority was to ensure each mission had a distinct tactical aim and made a significant contribution to the country's security.

The operational gains reported are part of a broader transformation agenda under Air Marshal Aneke. This plan centers on improving operational results, staff well-being, technological progress, and organizational responsibility. With respect to staff well-being, the Air Chief embraced the concept of supporting troops to boost combat capability, acknowledging that well-supported and motivated staff are vital for maintaining high operational standards. As a result, the military branch has worked to enhance pay, healthcare, housing, and other facilities for its members. In addition, transport flights for staff stationed in active combat zones have been resumed.

The statement also highlighted significant advancements in personnel development and promotions. Ejodame revealed that 57 high-ranking officers received promotions to the grades of Air Vice Marshal and Air Commodore. Moreover, 1,534 senior NCOs and 1,936 NCOs were elevated to superior positions. On the subject of education, over 550 staff members took part in global training and professional events, while more than 6,000 underwent domestic instruction to refine their technical abilities, specialized skills, and leadership potential.

Why it matters

The disclosure of these operational metrics provides insight into the scale and resource intensity of the Nigerian Air Force’s current security engagements. The consumption of nearly 10 million litres of fuel and the execution of thousands of sorties indicate a sustained and high-tempo operational tempo aimed at addressing security challenges across the country. The emphasis on intelligence-led mission planning suggests a strategic shift towards more targeted and efficient operations, aiming to maximize the impact of each sortie while minimizing unnecessary resource expenditure.

The focus on personnel welfare and professional development is also significant for the long-term sustainability of the force. By improving allowances, medical support, and accommodation, and by investing in both local and international training, the NAF aims to maintain high morale and technical proficiency among its personnel. This approach is intended to ensure that the force remains effective and resilient in the face of ongoing security threats. The promotions of hundreds of officers and non-commissioned officers also reflect an effort to recognize service and ensure a steady pipeline of experienced leadership within the ranks.

What happens next

The statement was issued in anticipation of the first anniversary of Air Marshal Sunday Aneke’s tenure as Chief of the Air Staff, which will be marked on October 30. While the sources do not specify further upcoming operational plans or specific dates for future announcements, the released data serves as a baseline for evaluating the effectiveness of the current transformation agenda. The continued focus on operational effectiveness and personnel welfare suggests that these priorities will remain central to the NAF’s strategy in the coming months.
