The Delta State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of a 23-year-old man who was kidnapped in Owa-Alero, while also reporting the arrest of eight suspects in separate operations conducted across the state. These actions were part of a series of enforcement activities carried out between October 20 and October 23, 2026, which resulted in the recovery of multiple firearms, live ammunition, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, the rescue operation was led by operatives from the Owa-Oyibu Division in collaboration with local volunteer groups. The victim was abducted on October 19, 2026, in front of his residence in the Owa-Alero community. Authorities stated that the individual was grabbed by two alleged abductors and pulled into adjacent shrubbery. After the victim's sibling filed a complaint, law enforcement conducted a thorough sweep of the nearby foliage, resulting in his liberation on October 20. Authorities stated that efforts are currently ongoing to apprehend the two abductors who fled the scene.
In a separate incident, operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit raided a hotel in Abraka on October 23, 2026, which was suspected to be a hideout for drug-related activities. During the operation, six individuals suspected to be cultists were arrested. Officers found a sack holding a gun and materials believed to be cannabis on the site. Some individuals present at the location fled upon seeing the police operatives. Police are actively working to establish who owns and where the weapon originated, while also seeking to identify any other individuals involved in the event.
Background
The Delta State Police Command has been conducting intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks and recover illegally possessed weapons. On October 21, 2026, operatives from the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Sector III, Ubuluku, acted on credible intelligence to raid the residence of Richard Nmorsi, a 62-year-old man, in the Ekuku-Agbor community of Ika South Local Government Area. Acting on a valid legal authorization, officers discovered a homemade single-shot gun, 24 unspent rounds, and plants thought to be cannabis during their inspection. Nmorsi was arrested, and the exhibits were taken into custody for further investigation.
In the same community, another suspect, Amechi Osemeke, aged 56, was also arrested in possession of a double-barrel firearm and one live cartridge. Police indicated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the possession of these firearms. The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Chief Superintendent Samuel E. Erale, reiterated that the command would sustain these intelligence-led operations to safeguard communities across the state. He called on the community to stay alert and share reliable details with law enforcement, promising that all resources would be deployed to guarantee public security.
Why it matters
These operations highlight the ongoing security challenges in Delta State, particularly regarding kidnapping and the illegal possession of firearms. The recovery of multiple weapons, including locally fabricated arms, underscores the need for continued enforcement to prevent their use in criminal activities. The involvement of local volunteer groups in the rescue operation demonstrates a collaborative approach to community security. The arrests and recoveries aim to disrupt criminal networks and reduce the threat posed by armed suspects and illicit substances to residents in affected areas such as Owa-Alero, Abraka, and Ika South.
