The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has placed the Preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general elections on its online platform, https://display.inecnigeria.org. The move follows a physical display of the register at registration areas across Nigeria from 9 to 15 October 2026. INEC said the decision addresses requests from Nigerians and other stakeholders for broader accessibility and is part of its preparation for the Final Register of Voters, slated for publication in December 2026.

Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), explained that making the register available online aligns with the commission’s commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process. He noted that the online version mirrors the list previously shown at registration centres and that the commission continues to process claims and objections before final certification.

Background

Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, requires a public display of the voter register before finalisation. INEC complied by exhibiting the Preliminary Register at registration areas nationwide between 9 and 15 October 2026. Following that exercise, the commission received numerous calls and public requests for an online version, prompting the recent publication. The decision was reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets, including Legit.ng, Punch, Vanguard and Premium Times, all citing the same statement from Haruna. At the same time, political figures such as former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar criticised the commission for an initially blank online portal during the public scrutiny window, highlighting tensions around the register’s accessibility.

Why it matters

The online publication expands the ability of voters to verify their registration details without travelling to physical display sites, potentially increasing public confidence ahead of the 2027 elections. Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups, can now review the list more efficiently and raise objections where necessary. The commission has indicated that it will continue to address claims and objections before the final register is certified and released on 15 December 2026. Transparency in the voter register is considered crucial for the legitimacy of the upcoming elections, and the online access is presented as a step toward mitigating disputes.

What happens next

INEC will keep processing objections to the preliminary register until the final version is certified. The commission has scheduled the publication of the Final Register of Voters for 15 December 2026, after which the list will be used for voter identification in the 2027 general elections. No further details on additional steps were provided beyond the ongoing processing of claims and the planned final certification date.
