Background President Bola Tinubu announced a fresh slate of appointments to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on 16 October 2026. The nominations aim to fill vacancies created by the expiry of several tenures and are part of the commission's preparation for the general elections scheduled for January 2027.
Nominees for National Commissioner Posts The President re‑appointed Dr Bala Bila to continue representing the North‑East zone. New appointments for the remaining zones include Professor Mustapha Aliu, who will take over the North‑West slot previously held by Professor Abdullahi Zuru, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, slated to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North‑Central commissioner. For the South‑West, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola – currently the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun State – was nominated to become the national commissioner, succeeding Professor Cornelius Ajayi whose term ends on 24 October 2026.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Selections Two new RECs were also proposed. Retired permanent secretary Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye was named for Ekiti State, while Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State will replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura. Both appointments were disclosed in a State House press release issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Senate Scrutiny and Timeline All six nominees are required to undergo Senate screening before confirmation, as stipulated by Nigerian electoral law. President Tinubu appealed to lawmakers to accelerate the process, stressing the proximity of the 2027 elections and the need for a fully staffed INEC to ensure smooth electoral administration. The Senate’s deliberations were highlighted in reports from Vanguard, AllAfrica, Legit.ng, Nairametrics and Premium Times.
Significance for the 2027 Elections The appointments come at a critical juncture, with INEC intensifying its preparations for the upcoming polls. Filling the commissioner and REC positions is viewed as essential for maintaining the commission’s operational capacity and credibility. By urging a prompt confirmation, the President seeks to avoid any administrative gaps that could affect voter registration, logistics, or result collation during the election cycle.
Outlook If the Senate confirms the nominees swiftly, the refreshed INEC leadership will be in place well before the election timetable commences. Observers note that the effectiveness of these appointments will be judged by how efficiently INEC can manage the 2027 electoral process, from voter education to the final tally of results.
