Gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, outside the cleric’s residence in Dutsin‑Ma Local Government Area of Katsata State on the night of 26 October 2026. The attack was reported to have occurred around 7.30 pm according to the Katsina State Police Command, while other outlets placed the time nearer 9 pm. Both victims were rushed to Dutsin‑Ma Hospital where a doctor pronounced them dead.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the killings in a statement issued by its public‑relations officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq. The Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin‑Ma led a team to the scene after the report was received. Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage ordered the deployment of tactical and operational units to the area and announced that an investigation had begun to locate and arrest the suspects.
Background
Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, also referred to as Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka in some reports, was a prominent Islamic scholar in Katsina State. Earlier in November 2025 the state government announced that he would appear before a committee of Islamic scholars to defend his religious teachings, a controversy that had drawn public attention. However, the police statements and news reports made no direct link between that earlier dispute and the fatal shooting.
The incident follows a pattern of bandit‑related violence in northern Nigeria, where armed groups frequently target civilians, officials and religious figures. While the perpetrators have not been identified, the Daily Trust and other outlets described them as suspected bandits.
Why it matters
The killing has plunged the local community into mourning, particularly among the cleric’s followers and residents who knew him. Masussuka had been scheduled to organise a religious gathering later in the week, an event now cancelled amid security concerns. The loss of a high‑profile religious leader underscores ongoing insecurity in Katsina State and raises questions about the effectiveness of police response to bandit attacks.
Police officials have expressed regret over the deaths and have pledged to intensify efforts to apprehend the gunmen. The incident also adds pressure on state authorities to address the broader issue of banditry that has plagued the region for years.
What happens next
The Katsina State Police Command has deployed tactical and operational teams to Dutsin‑Ma and launched an investigation aimed at tracking the fleeing suspects. No arrests have been reported as of the latest statements. The police commissioner reiterated condolences to the families and followers of the victims and affirmed that the command would pursue the perpetrators. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
