Attack on the Mishkaham Bokkos On Monday night, Da Jatau Yohanna Samkwar, the traditional ruler of Bokkos in Plateau State, was attacked at his residence in Daffo. Suspected gunmen entered the house and fired shots that struck Samkwar in the leg. He was immediately transported to a local hospital in Daffo for treatment.
Hospital Transfer and Death After initial care, Samkwar was referred to another medical facility. Despite medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. The death was confirmed by Kefas Mallai, chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos local government.
Context of Violence Mallai noted that the ruler’s son had been kidnapped earlier in the week but was released on Sunday. The gunmen returned to the residence later that night to carry out the fatal attack. He expressed concern that repeated assaults and killings have become a daily reality for residents, who continue to conduct market activities and run businesses despite the security climate.
Additional Incident The same community leader reported that, during the day, three individuals were attacked while travelling on a motorcycle along a road linking local communities. Two of the victims were killed and one sustained injuries. The incident occurred in broad daylight, further underscoring the volatility of the area.
Security Implications The incident has raised alarms about the normalisation of violence in Bokkos. Mallai highlighted that many residents no longer report incidents because they have become accustomed to frequent killings. The community remains vigilant, but the persistence of such attacks suggests a need for heightened security measures.
Conclusion The killing of the Mishkaham Bokkos illustrates the escalating security challenges facing Plateau State. With a pattern of kidnappings, shootings and other violent acts, local authorities and community groups are urged to address the underlying causes to restore safety for residents.
