Bauchi State police announced the arrest of two suspects linked to the deaths of two minors in separate incidents in the Alkaleri and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas. The arrests were confirmed by state police spokesperson Nafiu Habib in statements released on 26 and 27 October 2026.

The initial incident concerned a male child who became unwell after consuming a drink supplied by his stepmother, a 23-year-old woman named Fatima Ibrahim from Kwaimawa village. The boy began vomiting shortly after consuming the drink on 16 October, was taken to the Primary Health Care Centre in Kwaimawa and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe. After eight days of treatment, a doctor confirmed his death on 24 October. Following a report from the village head, detectives arrested Ibrahim, who remains in custody while investigations continue.

The second incident concerned a five‑year‑old girl whose body was discovered in a water pit in Badaromo village on the morning of 24 October. Her grandfather reported her missing on 23 October at about 7 pm, prompting a community search that led to the grim finding at around 7 am the next day. Police from the Soro Division secured the scene and arrested 19‑year‑old Sadiku Musa, a resident of the same address, in connection with the girl’s death.

Background

Both cases have been transferred to the Bauchi State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed inquiry. The incidents occurred in two different villages within the state: Kwaimawa in Alkaleri LGA and Badaromo in Ganjuwa LGA. The police response was triggered by reports from local community leaders – the village head of Kwaimawa in the first case and the girl’s grandfather in the second. Sani-Omolori Aliyu, the state Commissioner of Police, characterized the fatalities as tragic and cruel, while promising that legal proceedings would be initiated to ensure accountability.

Why it matters

The deaths have raised concerns about child safety in rural Bauchi communities. The Commissioner urged parents, guardians and community leaders to increase vigilance and protect children from potential harm. The arrests signal a law‑enforcement focus on holding adults accountable for actions leading to child fatalities. Families of the deceased have received condolences from the police command, and the cases are being handled discreetly to ensure thorough investigation.

What happens next

The State Criminal Investigation Department will continue its investigations into both deaths, with the suspects remaining in police custody pending further legal proceedings. The police have not disclosed any additional charges or court dates at this stage, but the Commissioner affirmed that the command will pursue justice if the suspects are found culpable.
