Police in Bauchi State have rescued an 18-year-old woman from an angry mob after she allegedly stabbed her 30-year-old husband in the stomach. The incident took place on Sunday, 25 October 2026, at approximately 6:00 am in Lirr Bajar, located in the Dass Local Government Area of the state. The suspect, identified as Fatima Dalha, was detained by officers from the Dass Divisional Police Headquarters who intervened to prevent a lynching by a crowd that had gathered at the scene.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the confrontation began when Dalha demanded the return of specific items she claimed were in her husband's possession. The disputed items included money, wrappers, and a mobile phone. The argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, during which Dalha allegedly reached for a knife nearby and struck her husband in the abdomen. The injured man was immediately transported to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. The knife used in the attack was recovered by police and the suspect has been taken into custody.
Background
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for further investigation. SP Nafiu Habib, speaking to journalists, described the event as a sudden escalation of a domestic dispute. He noted that the marriage had lasted only a few months before the incident shattered the relationship. The police statement emphasized that the neighbourhood reacted violently to the stabbing, necessitating a rapid response from law enforcement to protect the suspect from immediate retribution.
This incident follows a similar case reported in 2025 in Bauchi State. In that previous instance, a 25-year-old woman named Salamatu Danjuma was arrested for the fatal stabbing of her husband in Nadabo village, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area. That dispute had centred on the custody of a six-year-old child from a prior relationship. The recurrence of such violent domestic disputes has prompted officials to address the broader issue of conflict resolution among young couples in the region.
Why it matters
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed significant concern over the rising trend of domestic violence among young couples. He urged spouses to resolve disagreements through peaceful means, including mediation by family members, elders, or lawful channels, rather than resorting to physical violence. The Commissioner warned against the practice of "jungle justice," reiterating the police command's commitment to ensuring that legal processes are followed professionally and humanely. The incident highlights the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms within households to prevent fatal or severe injuries resulting from domestic altercations.
What happens next
The suspect remains in police custody while the State Criminal Investigation Department conducts its inquiry. The husband is expected to continue his recovery at the hospital. No further dates or specific legal proceedings have been announced at this time, but the case is under active investigation by the relevant state police units.
