On 17 October 2026 a court in Bauchi State handed down eight‑year prison terms to eight individuals convicted of thuggery and disturbing public peace in the Unguwar Dim neighbourhood of Bauchi metropolis.
The judgment also gave each convicted person the option of paying a fine of N370,000, a detail supplied by the Bauchi State Police Command in a public statement.
The arrests were triggered by a complaint lodged on 14 October by the local Peace and Security Committee, which reported a resurgence of thuggery in the area. Police officers, working alongside members of the community security committee, conducted a raid on a suspected hideout in the early hours of 15 October, detaining nine suspects.
During the operation, authorities recovered a variety of dangerous items, including machetes, cutlasses, knives, sticks, as well as illicit substances and other hazardous materials.
Following investigative procedures, eight of the nine detainees were formally charged and appeared before the court. All eight pleaded guilty to the charges and were subsequently convicted. The ninth individual was not charged, according to police reports.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib outlined the sequence of events and the sentencing outcome, highlighting the collaborative effort between law enforcement and community members in addressing the disturbance.
Commissioner of Police Sani‑Omolori Aliyu welcomed the court's decision, describing it as a product of effective cooperation between the police and residents. He reiterated the police command's commitment to tackling thuggery and other violent crimes across Bauchi State.
The combined use of custodial sentences and monetary fines reflects the authorities' strategy to deter future public disorder while encouraging citizens to provide credible information to support policing efforts.
