For the first time in three years, no Nigerian player has been included in the nominations for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The prestigious football award’s winner is set to be revealed on Monday at the London Palladium, and Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé are the current frontrunners. The absence of Nigerian names from the men’s shortlist, the women’s list, and all other trophy categories marks a significant shift for the nation, which has seen its players recognized in recent years.

The ceremony, which marks the 70th edition of the award, begins at 8 pm in London, corresponding to 9 pm in Nigeria. Historically, this gala is significant because it is the first occasion it has been held outside Paris. The proceedings will be hosted by Kate Scott and Thierry Henry. The lack of Nigerian representation comes despite strong individual performances by key Super Eagles players during the preceding period.

Background

The 2026 Ballon d’Or evaluation period extended from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026, which coincided with the World Cup final. During this period, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were central to Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they scored seven of the team’s 14 goals. Both players were among the tournament’s top four scorers. Osimhen concluded the 2025/26 season with 30 goal contributions across all competitions, while Lookman recorded 12 goals and six assists.

However, the omission is largely attributed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Performances on the biggest international stage carry significant weight with the judges. This exclusion ends a brief period of consistent recognition for Nigerian footballers. In 2023, Osimhen finished eighth in the voting after a prolific season that helped Napoli win the Serie A title. In the subsequent year, Lookman finished 14th after netting a hat‑trick in Atalanta’s Europa League final win against Bayer Leverkusen and performing well in the AFCON campaign. In the most recent cycle, recognition came from the women’s game, with Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie nominated after Nigeria’s 3-2 win over Morocco in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final. Madugu was named a finalist for the Women’s Team Coach of the Year award, and Nnadozie received a nomination for the Yashin Trophy; each ended up placing fourth in their categories.

Why it matters

The current 30-man men’s shortlist is dominated by Paris Saint-Germain, which has 10 nominees, including defending champion Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, and Vitinha. Other clubs with multiple representatives include Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Arsenal. The Premier League cohort includes Gabriel, Declan Rice and William Saliba, with Erling Haaland and Bruno Fernandes being the sole additional players from England’s top division. Sadio Mané of Al Nassr is the sole African player on the men’s list. Lionel Messi, an eight-time winner, is also on the list as an outsider following a strong World Cup performance.

The stakes are high for Harry Kane, who captained England to a third-place finish at the World Cup. If he wins the award, he will become the first Englishman to claim the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. For Nigerian fans, the absence of Osimhen and Lookman highlights the increasing difficulty of qualifying for the award without World Cup participation, as the judges place heavy emphasis on results in the tournament. The omission underscores the competitive nature of the shortlist, where club success and international tournament performance are heavily weighted against domestic or continental achievements alone.

What happens next

The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner will be revealed at the ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday. The event will also see the presentation of other awards, including the Yashin Trophy and the Women’s Team Coach of The Year. With the shortlist finalized and the ceremony scheduled, the focus now turns to the final voting results, which will determine whether Kane, Yamal, or Mbappe, or another nominee, will add their name to the list of recipients.
