The executive chairman of Zaki Local Government Area in Bauchi State was killed in a road accident on the Bauchi‑Maiduguri Federal Highway on Sunday evening. According to reports, the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. The incident occurred near the Konkiyal axis in Darazo Local Government Area while the chairman was on his way back to Zaki after a meeting with stakeholders of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Senator Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, confirmed the death through a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

One report identified the deceased as Masud Aliyu, while another named him Mallam Mas’ud Umar, both noting that he served as the chairman of Zaki Local Government Area. Both accounts state that he had earlier held the position of Director‑General of the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), where he was engaged in emergency response, disaster management and humanitarian work. The governor described him as a committed public servant, grassroots politician and compassionate leader whose contributions to community development would be remembered.

Background

The fatal incident followed a political gathering organised by the Allied Peoples Movement, a party whose national leader is Governor Bala Mohammed. The meeting was held in Bauchi State and was presided over by the governor himself, according to the Daily Post account. The chairman’s tenure as council chairman was relatively short, but he was noted for his focus on youth and women empowerment, as well as improving livelihoods in Zaki. Prior to his election as council chairman, his role as SEMA Director‑General placed him at the centre of the state’s emergency and disaster response mechanisms.

Why it matters

The death has sent shockwaves through political and administrative circles in Bauchi State, particularly within Zaki Local Government Area. Governor Mohammed’s remarks underscored the loss to the local community, the Katagum Emirate Council, the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the wider public service. The chairman’s involvement in grassroots development projects meant that his absence could affect ongoing initiatives aimed at youth and women empowerment, as well as broader community welfare programmes.

What happens next

A funeral prayer has been scheduled for 2 November 2026 at 2 p.m. at the Palace of the District Head in Mur Mur, Zaki Local Government Area. The governor’s office has offered condolences to the chairman’s family, the residents of Zaki, the Katagum Emirate Council and his political colleagues. No further details on investigations or official inquiries into the cause of the crash were provided in the available reports.
