Abdul‑Samad Rabiu, the billionaire chairman of Nigeria’s BUA Group, posted on Facebook that he entered the interior of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah on Sunday together with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Rabiu described the event as a rare, once‑in‑a‑lifetime blessing, adding that he used it to pray for national peace, unity and economic progress.

The industrialist’s statement, first reported by Premium Times and reproduced by AllAfrica, emphasized gratitude for the rare honour of being granted access to the sacred chamber, which is normally closed to the public and opened only under strict Saudi royal protocol.

Background

The Kaaba, situated within the Grand Mosque in Makkah, is the most sacred site in Islam and is normally sealed year‑round. Access to its interior requires a direct royal order from the King of Saudi Arabia or the Crown Prince, Muhammad Bin Salman, according to Saudi protocol. The Bani Shaybah (Al‑Shaibi) family retains the physical custody of the Kaaba and its key, a custom that began with the Prophet Muhammad’s conquest of Makkah.

When the golden door opens, the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques deploys a ceremonial staircase, while senior custodians supervise the locking mechanism. Granting access to the Kaaba for a visiting foreign Muslim head of state is considered the highest expression of spiritual respect and bilateral esteem that the Kingdom can offer.

President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s head of state since May 2023, was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia when the Kaaba entry took place. Rabiu’s BUA Group is one of Nigeria’s largest conglomerates, with interests in cement, sugar, and other sectors, and the chairman’s presence alongside the president underscores the close ties between Nigerian business leaders and the government.

Why it matters

Rabiu’s description of the Kaaba visit highlights the diplomatic significance of the occasion. The rare access granted to a foreign president and a leading Nigerian industrialist signals strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The event also carries symbolic weight for Nigeria’s largely Muslim population, as the president’s participation in such a sacred ritual may be seen as an affirmation of religious solidarity.

Rabiu’s prayers for lasting peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria mirror ongoing worries about the country’s security issues and economic development. By linking the spiritual experience to national aspirations, the chairman underscores the role of prominent business figures in shaping public discourse on governance and stability.

What happens next

The sources do not specify any further official activities linked to the Kaaba visit. No additional statements from the Saudi authorities or the Nigerian government were reported beyond Rabiu’s Facebook post. The visit appears to have concluded with the customary sealing of the Kaaba and the departure of the Nigerian delegation from Makkah.
