Benjamin Okezie Kalu, who serves as the Deputy Speaker of the lower chamber, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sanctioned the distribution of 500,000 solar lamps to rural homes throughout the South-East region. The announcement was made during the flag-off ceremony for the Renewed Hope Light-Up initiative in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State. The project aims to address the critical lack of electricity in underserved communities by providing alternative energy sources and connecting areas to the national grid.

At a ceremony taking place on Monday, local communities in the district received 26 power transformers alongside 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans. Kalu stated that 42,000 households in Bende Federal Constituency have been specifically earmarked to benefit from this phase of the intervention. He noted that the first batch of 10,000 units is expected to be delivered within two weeks, following a pilot scheme in which 1,000 units were already distributed and confirmed to be functional by ward representatives. The initiative is described as a significant step toward making the benefits of the government’s agenda tangible for residents who have long struggled with unreliable power supply.

Background

The Renewed Hope Light-Up Project was initiated after a constituency-wide needs assessment identified darkness and the lack of access to power as the most pressing issues in Bende Federal Constituency. Kalu explained that the project consists of two main components: connecting communities to the national grid through the distribution of transformers and providing alternative solar energy for households. He stated that the plan received presidential approval when he presented the figure of 42,000 households to President Tinubu, emphasizing the need for reliable light for children to study at night without kerosene lanterns and for families to power fans and charge mobile phones.

This initiative supports President Tinubu's eight-point Renewed Hope Agenda, a plan aimed at enhancing the economic well-being of Nigerians from the most local levels. The agenda focuses on job creation, security, human capacity development, agriculture, and food security. Kalu described the project as having a ripple effect that supports these broader national goals. Local stakeholders have highlighted the severity of the power crisis in the area. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, the legislator for Bende South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, observed that certain areas had suffered from a lack of electricity for roughly two years because of broken transformers. The project contractor, Solar Systems Nigeria, represented by Peter Oko, stated that the initiative would also create opportunities for youth training and empowerment while ensuring the delivery of reliable services.

Why it matters

The approval of 500,000 solar lights for the South-East marks a significant expansion of the energy intervention beyond the initial pilot in Bende. For the 42,000 households in the Bende constituency, the project addresses a fundamental infrastructure gap that has affected economic activity, security, and educational opportunities. The distribution of 26 transformers is intended to restore grid connectivity in areas that have suffered prolonged outages. By providing solar alternatives, the government aims to reduce reliance on kerosene and improve the quality of life for rural residents. The involvement of the project contractor in youth training suggests an additional economic benefit, potentially creating local employment opportunities linked to the installation and maintenance of the new energy systems. The initiative is positioned as a landmark project that demonstrates the federal government's commitment to addressing the specific needs of the South-East region.

What happens next

The initial shipment of 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans is expected to reach the Bende Federal Constituency within two weeks of the announcement. Following this initial distribution, the remaining units for the 42,000 targeted households in the constituency are expected to be rolled out in subsequent phases. The broader rollout of the 500,000 units approved for the entire South-East zone will likely follow a similar phased approach, with specific timelines and distribution schedules to be determined for other states and constituencies in the region.
