Bus crash in Lent kills two and injures 16

On the morning of 6 November 2026 a bus travelling from Lyon to Bourg‑en‑Bresse crashed in the town of Lent, about 55 km from the Swiss border. The collision left a blue and white bus tilted in a roadside ditch. Two people – a child and a young adult – were killed, and 16 others sustained injuries, three of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred at around 07:00 local time. The bus was carrying 43 passengers, including 15 children, according to the Bourg‑en‑Bresse prosecutor’s office. The driver was taken to hospital with injuries and has not yet been questioned by police.

Background

Lent is a small town in the Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes region. The mayor, Yves Cristin, arrived at the scene minutes after the crash and described the scene as chaotic, with the side of the bus torn off. He said the bus had left the road and hit a tree in a ditch. Weather conditions at the time were described as foggy and wet, but not severely hazardous. There is disagreement over the type of vehicle involved. The mayor referred to it as a school bus, while the local prefecture stated it was an intercity bus. The prefecture also reported that about 40 people were affected, whereas the mayor claimed 70 people were impacted.

Why it matters

The crash has drawn attention from national officials. French Education Minister Édouard Geffray remarked that it is invariably challenging when young people are harmed by such occurrences. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot travelled to the area and noted that more than 100 firefighters were dispatched. Medical helicopters were used to transport seriously injured passengers to a specialised hospital. The incident has also prompted social media reactions, including a post by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on X, confirming that two children had died. The local town hall opened its community hall to provide shelter and coordination for victims.

What happens next

Investigations are ongoing. The driver has not yet been questioned, and authorities are examining the cause of the crash. As no formal account has been released, regional leader Fabrice Pannekoucke noted that specific reasons or interpretations cannot currently be provided. The prefecture has issued a statement that three injured people are in critical condition. The local authorities have set up a temporary shelter in the community hall to support those affected.
