Santa Monica Studio announced on 4 November 2026 that its upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, God of War Laufey, will not launch on the previously scheduled 16 February 2027 date. The new release window is set for 20 May 2027, a three‑month postponement.

The development team announced the news through their verified social media accounts, stating that the extra period would allow them to refine the game and ensure it reaches its maximum capability. The statement also thanked fans for their patience and promised further updates as development progresses.

The delay aligns the game with a less crowded release slate for Sony, avoiding competition from other first‑party titles slated for early 2027 such as Until Dawn 2 (launching 28 January) and the annual MLB The Show series, typically released in March.

Background

God of War Laufey was first unveiled during the June 2026 State of Play showcase. The announcement introduced Faye, Kratos’ late wife, as the protagonist navigating the “Everywhen,” an afterlife realm for the gods. The narrative is designed to run parallel to the events of the 2018 God of War reboot and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, offering insight into Faye’s role in the series’ mythology.

The game is being developed by Santa Monica Studio, a subsidiary of PlayStation Studios, and will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console. Alongside Laufey, the studio confirmed that another Kratos‑led title is also in development and will tie directly into the events of Laufey.

Why it matters

The postponement impacts several stakeholder groups. For Sony, the shift ensures a stronger presence in the spring quarter of 2027, providing a flagship first‑party title when the market is typically less saturated. Supporters can anticipate a more refined product, given that the creators highlighted their resolve to provide a remarkable experience that honors the enthusiasm and loyalty of their audience.

Industry observers note that the timing also avoids direct competition with Until Dawn 2, which debuted on 28 January 2027, and the March release of MLB The Show, both of which could have divided consumer attention and sales.

What happens next

Santa Monica Studio indicated that it will continue to share updates through its social media channels in the coming weeks. No further concrete milestones were disclosed beyond the confirmed 20 May 2027 launch date. The studio’s message suggested that the development team will use the intervening months to finalise gameplay, narrative, and technical elements before the final release.

The announcement has been covered by multiple gaming outlets, including Engadget, Kotaku, The Verge, and GameSpot, all of which reported the same revised launch date and the studio’s rationale for the delay.
