SpaceX has entered into a multi-year partnership with chipmaker Qualcomm to develop the terrestrial infrastructure for its Starlink Mobile service. Under the agreement, SpaceX plans to integrate Qualcomm’s Dragonwing cellular infrastructure technology into tens of thousands of 5G cell sites across the United States. The first deployments under this arrangement are scheduled to begin in 2027. Financial terms for the deal were not disclosed by either company. This collaboration is a central component of SpaceX’s strategy to establish Starlink Mobile as a major telecommunications carrier in the US market, positioning it as a direct competitor to established providers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Background

The partnership leverages Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platform, which consists of hardware and software designed to enhance network coverage, capacity, and efficiency. While Qualcomm is widely recognized for manufacturing modems and radios for consumer devices, it has expanded into the 5G infrastructure market since 2020, targeting carriers and infrastructure providers. SpaceX represents one of the company’s most prominent recent clients in this sector, following previous infrastructure deals with Verizon, Dish, and Vodafone.

SpaceX’s move into mobile services addresses a limitation in its current satellite-only offering, which has not yet provided the comprehensive voice, video, and data coverage required for standard smartphone use. To support this expansion, SpaceX has aggressively acquired spectrum rights, including a nationwide portfolio in the 800 MHz band announced last month. Additionally, recent reports from the Washington Post indicate that SpaceX is in discussions to acquire Boost Mobile, a subsidiary of EchoStar. Starlink remains a significant financial pillar for SpaceX, contributing 36% of the company’s revenue and 85% of its operating profit in the third quarter. SpaceX went public in June, resulting in the largest initial public offering on record, and is currently valued at nearly $2 trillion.

Why it matters

The alliance between SpaceX and Qualcomm aims to create a hybrid network that combines satellite capabilities with terrestrial base stations. Durga Malladi, Qualcomm’s executive vice president and general manager of technology planning, stated that the collaboration is building world-leading cellular infrastructure in the United States. He noted that the project advances 5G technology today while laying the foundation for AI-native 6G in the coming years. For consumers, this development could lead to improved mobile coverage in areas currently underserved by traditional carriers. For the existing telecom industry, the entry of a well-capitalized new competitor with significant spectrum holdings and satellite assets has already caused market volatility, with shares of major US carriers falling following the announcement of SpaceX’s spectrum purchases. However, SpaceX has not yet identified partners among cell tower companies such as American Tower or Crown Castle, nor has it specified the exact number of new towers required for the rollout.

What happens next

The initial deployment of the joint infrastructure is set for 2027. SpaceX has not provided further details on the specific timeline for subsequent phases or the total scale of the network beyond the stated goal of tens of thousands of sites. The company did not respond to requests for additional information regarding the operational specifics of the partnership.
