Workers at Rockstar Games' United Kingdom offices are scheduled to hold a ballot on recognizing the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWUGB) from November 12 to November 26. This period of employee decision-making occurs just days before the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19. If the vote is successful, the resulting Rockstar Game Workers Union would become the largest recognized union within the UK's video game industry. The union covers staff across all of the company's UK locations, including Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Scotland, which serves as the lead developer for the upcoming title.

Background

The push for union recognition follows a series of labor disputes and legal proceedings between Rockstar Games and the IWUGB. The IWUGB filed a complaint against the developer after more than 30 employees were laid off in October 2025. The majority of those dismissed were either current union members or actively involved in organizing efforts. The union alleged that these dismissals constituted union-busting activities. In response, Rockstar stated that the terminations were due to misconduct, specifically citing the sharing of confidential information.

An employment tribunal was convened to address these allegations. Originally scheduled to conclude earlier in October, the case has been extended. Closing arguments are now expected to be delivered on November 17 or 18, shortly before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. The Rockstar Game Workers Union was formally announced in May 2026. In the months following the layoffs, remaining unionizing workers have maintained ongoing discussions with company management. Jennifer Kolbe, head of publishing at Rockstar, addressed the situation in an interview, stating that the company respects the team's direction. She indicated that if the employees desire a union, the company will allow them to have one.

Why it matters

The potential recognition of the union is significant for the UK gaming sector, as it would establish the largest recognized union in the industry. For the employees involved, union recognition would provide a stronger collective position in negotiations regarding key workplace issues. These issues include pay and bonuses, overtime policies, work-from-home arrangements, and protocols for handling layoffs. Additionally, the union aims to address policies concerning generative AI. The timing of the vote, overlapping with the release of one of the most anticipated video games of the year, places considerable public and corporate attention on the labor relations at the studio. The concurrent conclusion of the employment tribunal adds a legal dimension to the dispute, with the outcome potentially influencing how the company manages future labor relations.

What happens next

The employee ballot will take place between November 12 and November 26. The outcome of this vote will determine whether the IWUGB branch at Rockstar is officially recognized. Simultaneously, the employment tribunal will hear closing arguments on November 17 or 18. The results of both the union vote and the tribunal proceedings are expected to shape the future of labor relations at Rockstar's UK offices.
