New appointments announced

On 5 November 2026 the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced the posting of four Commissioners of Police to state commands across Nigeria. The appointments were made after a series of interviews that evaluated the officers’ suitability for the new roles. The announcement was delivered by PSC spokesman Torty Njoku Kalu at the Solomon Arase Conference Hall in Abuja.

The four officers appointed are: * CP Sunday J. A. Okoebor, formerly Commissioner of Police for Police Accounts and Budget at Force Headquarters, now CP Plateau State. * CP Fidelis Ogarabe, formerly Commissioner of Police for the INTERPOL Annex in Lagos, now CP Enugu State. * CP Sheikh Mohammed Danko, formerly Commissioner of Police for the Force Intelligence Annex in Lagos, now CP Nasarawa State. * CP Johnson Ayodeji Babalola, formerly Commissioner of Police for Special Inquiry at Force Headquarters, now CP Ondo State.

Background

The PSC is empowered by Section 215(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution to appoint Commissioners of Police for each state and the Federal Capital Territory. The commission’s chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu, confirmed that the appointments comply with this constitutional provision. During the announcement, Argungu, who was represented by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and a board member, highlighted that the officers had demonstrated the required knowledge and character during the interviews.

The PSC has previously overseen the rotation of senior police officers to ensure fresh leadership and accountability across state commands. The current postings continue this practice, aiming to strengthen policing at the state level.

Why it matters

The new Commissioners of Police will be responsible for overseeing law enforcement operations, crime prevention, and public safety in their respective states. Their leadership will directly influence the effectiveness of policing, the implementation of national security policies, and the maintenance of public order. The appointments are therefore significant for residents, businesses and government agencies in Plateau, Enugu, Nasarawa and Ondo, as the Commissioners will shape policing priorities and resource allocation.

The PSC’s statement emphasised the need for impartiality and accountability, urging the new officers to meet the expectations of their roles. This focus reflects broader concerns about police performance and governance across Nigeria.

What happens next

The PSC has not announced any further steps beyond the appointments. The new Commissioners will assume their duties following the formal posting, and their performance will be monitored by the PSC and relevant state authorities. No additional dates or pending decisions were disclosed in the sources.
