A British national who tested positive for Ebola while in the Democratic Republic of Congo is scheduled to be flown back to the United Kingdom, according to a government spokesperson. The individual is identified as a healthcare worker, though the exact timing of the evacuation has not been disclosed.

The case marks the first confirmed instance of a UK citizen contracting Ebola during the current outbreak in the DRC, which has resulted in more than 5,000 deaths and over 10,000 confirmed cases since it began in May. Officials emphasised that the risk to the wider UK public remains low, citing well‑established procedures for handling such cases.

Background

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is driven by the Bundibugyo variant, which has a reported fatality rate of 48.6% as of the end of October. The outbreak is the deadliest in the country's history and the second most lethal worldwide after the West African epidemic of 2014‑2015. While imported Ebola cases in the UK are extremely rare, there have been four confirmed instances historically: one laboratory‑related case in 1976 and three health‑worker cases linked to the West Africa outbreak.

According to the World Health Organization, there is currently no authorized vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, although two potential immunizations – one created by the University of Oxford alongside the Serum Institute of India and the other by Moderna – are scheduled to enter an active clinical study once Congolese health regulators grant their consent. The current outbreak has also spread to neighbouring Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.

Why it matters

The repatriation underscores the UK government's capacity to manage imported infectious disease cases without endangering the public. Health officials have repeatedly stressed that the established protocols are designed to contain any potential spread, and that previous imported Ebola cases have not resulted in fatalities within the UK.

The affected individual, as a healthcare worker, represents the frontline personnel most exposed to the virus, highlighting the occupational risks faced by medical staff in outbreak zones. The broader outbreak continues to strain health systems across central Africa, with high mortality and limited treatment options, reinforcing the importance of international monitoring and support.

What happens next

The British man will be transported back to the UK under the activated procedures referenced by the government spokesperson. Further details about the flight schedule and subsequent medical care are expected to be released in due course. Health authorities will continue to monitor the situation and maintain public communication, reaffirming that the overall risk to the UK population remains low.

The case also aligns with ongoing efforts to introduce new vaccine candidates into clinical trials, which could shape future responses to Ebola outbreaks, particularly those involving the Bundibugyo variant.
