Following the verification of a primary infection in Abuja, the Lagos State administration has intensified its defensive protocols against Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). In response to this development, state authorities have upgraded the local isolation centre and are targeting the delivery of laboratory test results within 24 hours. In response to the developing scenario, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu instructed pertinent bodies to sustain maximum vigilance and readiness.
Prof. Akin Abayomi, the state Commissioner for Health, disclosed these measures in a recent statement. He explained that Lagos is treating the situation as a priority due to the constant movement of people between the state and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Abayomi observed that the state’s Emergency Operations Centre had been proactively engaging in simulation drills prior to the confirmed diagnosis, ensuring that response teams comprehended their duties during a potential epidemic.
Background
According to the Commissioner, the state’s isolation centre has already been upgraded, while work is ongoing to develop additional capacity. Training for health workers in both public and private facilities is currently underway, with a specific emphasis on infection prevention and control. The state is also establishing a clear pathway for laboratory testing to streamline the process from sample collection to result delivery.
A dedicated Ebola Research Committee has been established to review the latest evidence regarding treatments and vaccines, which will guide future decision-making. Additionally, the state is collaborating with federal counterparts to improve screening procedures at airports and other entry points. To boost the identification, tracking, and immediate reaction to potential infections, disease monitoring is being upgraded through digital tools on the SHIP platform.
Why it matters
This intensified reaction is essential due to the substantial movement of people between Lagos and Abuja, which elevates the probability of the virus spreading. The state aims to ensure that health facilities are equipped to handle potential cases through improved infrastructure and trained personnel. Citizens are encouraged to keep their composure, remain vigilant, and depend on official updates from the Lagos State Ministry of Health instead of unreliable channels.
Public health authorities have recommended that locals frequently clean their hands with soap and water and steer clear of touching the blood or bodily fluids of sick individuals. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding, or those who suspect exposure to the virus, are advised not to self-medicate. Instead, they should contact health authorities before visiting a health facility.
Medical professionals have likewise been prompted to maintain a strong suspicion level, inquire about patients' recent travel, and utilize personal protective gear. Individuals can notify authorities about potential infections or exposures by dialing the Lagos State emergency lines 112 and 767, or by reaching out to the Directorate of Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health at 0802 316 9485.
What happens next
The state continues to develop additional isolation capacity and refine its laboratory testing pathways. The Ebola Research Committee will continue to review evidence on treatments and vaccines to inform policy. Enhanced digital surveillance and screening at points of entry will remain in place in coordination with federal partners to monitor and respond to any further suspected cases.
