Following disciplinary hearings, the Police Service Commission (PSC) sanctioned the removal of three high-ranking officers and the reduction in rank of 16 additional personnel. The decisions were made during a plenary meeting held at the commission’s corporate headquarters in Abuja. The disciplinary actions were taken in response to established cases of serious misconduct and behaviour deemed unbecoming of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
In addition to the dismissals and demotions, the commission issued severe reprimands to 21 officers and ordinary reprimands to two others. Three officers were exonerated of wrongdoing following the review of their cases. The commission also announced the reinstatement of several officers who had previously been suspended from duty. These measures were part of a broader disciplinary sweep aimed at enforcing standards within the force.
Background
The decisions were reached during a plenary session presided over by the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.). The meeting took place at the Solomon Arase Conference Hall, located at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. A statement issued on Wednesday by Torty Njoku Kalu, the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, detailed the outcomes of the disciplinary process. The release emphasized that the PSC Standing Committee on Discipline and Legal Matters played a pivotal part in examining these matters.
The body praised the committee, headed by former Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, for their work in evaluating disciplinary issues and appeals. Additional individuals acknowledged for their commitment included former DIG Taiwo Lakanu, former Justice Christine Dabup, Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commission’s Secretary, and Mr Ferdinand U. Ekpe, the Director of the Police Discipline Department. Their efforts were cited as instrumental in the departmental, committee, and plenary considerations of the cases.
Why it matters
The PSC reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding corruption, human rights abuses, and meddling in land and civil matters. Chairman Argungu assured the public that disciplinary matters would continue to receive prompt attention and speedy resolution. The commission emphasised its determination to address misconduct and enforce discipline within the Police Force. The actions taken against the senior officers signal a continued effort to uphold professional standards and accountability among law enforcement personnel in Nigeria.
According to the announcement, the termination of the three senior officers was based on proven instances of grave professional misconduct. By taking these steps, the commission aims to restore public confidence in the integrity of the police service. The reinstatement of previously suspended officers also indicates a balanced approach to disciplinary justice, ensuring that those who were unfairly removed from duty are given the opportunity to return to service after a thorough review.
