Police pledge protection for NYSC members and election workers

The Nigeria Police Force declared on 5 November 2026 that it would guarantee sufficient protection for National Youth Service Corps personnel and other temporary staff hired by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections. The statement was made by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, at a joint briefing of security and intelligence agencies held in Abuja. The assurance follows a series of abductions involving corps members across the country. In November 2026, nine corps members and a commercial driver were kidnapped on the Ijebu‑Ode–Ibadan road in Ogun State. Earlier, on 1 October 2026, 20 prospective corps members were taken on the Owerri‑Onitsha road in Imo State; the incident has since been taken to court. Iniedu stated that the police had conducted a thorough threat evaluation and were bolstering protective measures to safeguard electoral staff and assets. He further noted that the Force was coordinating with INEC and various security bodies to guarantee that corps members and other temporary employees received proper protection throughout the pre-electoral, election day, and post-electoral periods.

Background

The NYSC is a mandatory national service programme that deploys young Nigerians to various public and private institutions, including electoral bodies. In previous election cycles, corps members have formed a significant portion of INEC’s ad hoc workforce. Concerns about their safety have risen after the recent kidnappings. During the Osun State voting process, the police interacted with corps members, their families, and other interested parties, promising that the Force was dedicated to securing all ad hoc staff. The operation was reported to have proceeded without any incidents or harm. The Nigeria Police Force has increased deployments ahead of the 2027 polls. The Inspector‑General of Police has directed the immediate distribution of operational equipment and logistics to support the expanded security presence.

Why it matters

The safety of NYSC members and other young Nigerians deployed for national assignments is a priority for the government. The abductions have highlighted potential vulnerabilities in the electoral process, as corps members constitute a large part of INEC’s temporary workforce. Adequate protection is essential to maintain the integrity and smooth conduct of the polls. The police spokesperson cautioned political figures to avoid hate speech, provocation, and other violent political actions that might jeopardize the electoral proceedings. He noted that 11 cases of hate speech had been documented and acted upon.

What happens next

The police intend to execute the reinforced security protocols in partnership with other security agencies across the pre-electoral, election day, and post-electoral phases. The exact deployment plan and timelines have not yet been disclosed. The Inspector‑General of Police has ordered the immediate distribution of operational equipment and logistics to support the expanded security presence. The assurance from the police is intended to reassure NYSC members, their families and the wider public that their safety will be protected throughout the electoral period.
