Lagos announces energy summit

On 5 November 2026, the Lagos State Government revealed plans for a major energy summit scheduled for 10 November. The event aims to bring together between 1,500 and 2,000 participants from across the energy value chain, including regulators, distribution companies, generators, investors and academics. Centered on the concept of Lagos Energy Evolution, the gathering aims to create viable and lasting fixes for the region's power supply issues.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, presented the vision at a press conference. He said the initiative is intended to move discussions on Lagos’ persistent energy problems beyond policy statements to actionable outcomes that improve supply, expand access and strengthen economic competitiveness.

The event serves as a forum where interested parties can analyze current obstacles and design a functional structure for a dependable and eco-friendly power sector. Ogunleye emphasized that because Lagos acts as the country's primary commercial and industrial center, it is essential that the state pioneers novel power strategies that other regions can emulate.

Background

Lagos has long faced electricity supply constraints, with frequent outages and limited access in some areas. Previous efforts have focused on policy declarations, but the current strategy emphasises private‑sector investment, industry collaboration and clean‑energy innovation. The state’s Clean Energy Initiative will be showcased at the summit, signalling a shift towards alternative and cleaner energy sources.

The commissioner outlined critical goals such as ensuring adequate, cheap, and reachable power, improving metering, advancing green energy, promoting electric transport, and installing efficient, compatible power systems. He pointed to compressed natural gas (CNG), electric cars, and other nascent green technologies as vital elements in the state's shift toward cleaner energy.

Why it matters

The summit is expected to attract significant private‑sector interest, with the commissioner noting growing enthusiasm for partnerships that can expand infrastructure, improve service delivery and address market constraints. Successful collaboration could enhance electricity reliability, broaden access, and boost the state’s economic competitiveness.

Participants from neighboring states are encouraged to join, which will facilitate the sharing of insights and the exchange of insights regarding the growth of the electricity sector. The event’s outcomes could set a precedent for other Nigerian states seeking to modernise their energy sectors.

What happens next

The summit will take place on 10 November, with the state government planning to showcase its Clean Energy Initiative and explore investment opportunities in CNG, electric vehicles and related technologies. No further dates or decisions have been announced beyond the summit’s schedule.
