Keanu Reeves returns as John Wick in animated form

Lionsgate announced on 5 November 2026 that it has green‑lit an animated prequel to the John Wick franchise, with Keanu Reeves signing on to voice the titular hitman. The feature will chart Wick’s early career, focusing on the Impossible Task – a night‑long killing of all his rivals – which frees him from the High Table and allows him to be with his love, Helen. The project is being produced by the core John Wick team: Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Reeves himself. Point Grey will also join the production. Shannon Tindle, known for Netflix’s *Ultraman: Rising* and *Kubo and the Two Strings*, will direct the film, which is written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo.

Background

The John Wick series has grossed over $1 billion worldwide across five live‑action films and the Ana de Armas‑led spinoff *Ballerina*. Lionsgate has been expanding the universe, with a fifth live‑action film and a Donnie Yen‑based Caine adventure in development. The animated prequel was first announced at CinemaCom 2025 by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson, who highlighted the “endless possibilities” of animation for the franchise. In a 2025 statement, Fogelson said the Impossible Task was the story fans most wanted to see.

Why it matters

Reeves’ involvement signals Lionsgate’s commitment to extending the franchise beyond live‑action. The animated format allows the studio to explore earlier chapters of Wick’s life without the constraints of a physical actor. The film’s focus on the Impossible Task provides a narrative that explains how Wick earned his reputation, potentially deepening audience understanding of the character. The project also showcases Tindle’s animation expertise, suggesting a high‑quality visual style that could attract both long‑time fans and new viewers. With the franchise already a $1 billion‑plus brand, the animated prequel represents a strategic move to broaden its appeal.

What happens next

Lionsgate has placed the film in pre‑production, with the studio’s CEO Jon Feltheimer noting the status in a recent earnings call. No release date has been announced, and further details on the production schedule or distribution plans are pending. The film’s development follows the ongoing expansion of the John Wick universe, which includes a forthcoming fifth live‑action movie and a separate Caine adventure. As the studio moves forward, fans can expect updates on release timelines and additional cast announcements.
