Phoebe Waller‑Bridge, the creator of the television series *Fleabag*, has purchased a London flat and offered it rent‑free to early‑career writers who struggle to afford accommodation in the capital. The flat will be made available through the new Writers’ Block initiative, with residents required only to cover utility bills. In addition to the property, Waller‑Bridge has made a financial contribution described by the scheme as generous.
The scheme targets playwrights and screenwriters from under‑privileged backgrounds, aiming to remove the cost of housing as a barrier to developing their careers. The flat is part of a pilot project intended to demonstrate how secure accommodation can enable writers to focus on their work rather than survival concerns.
Background
Writers’ Block builds on the Adopt a Playwright Award, an initiative launched in 2008 that already provided affordable accommodation for writers needing to be in London for rehearsals, meetings and performances. Both programmes were created by Sofie Mason and Diana Jervis‑Read. The new scheme expands this model by offering a dedicated flat owned by Waller‑Bridge.
The project has attracted support from several high‑profile industry figures. Screenwriter Jack Thorne, co‑creator of *Adolescence* and author of *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*, is providing financial backing and has spoken about his own experience of relying on family accommodation early in his career. Other backers include playwrights James Graham (known for *Ink*, *Quiz* and *Dear England*), Sally Wainwright, creator of *Happy Valley*, and Peter Morgan of *The Crown*. Waller‑Bridge’s partner, playwright and director Martin McDonagh, is also involved.
Why it matters
The high cost of London housing has been identified as a significant obstacle for writers from less affluent backgrounds, often forcing them to choose between basic survival and creative work. By eliminating rent, Writers’ Block seeks to prevent talented writers from abandoning their craft due to financial pressure. James Graham has highlighted that class remains a major area of under‑representation in the industry, and that schemes like this can help writers stay in the city long enough to secure opportunities.
Jack Thorne has emphasized that having a roof is essential for many writers to produce work, and that diverse storytelling depends on supporting writers from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The initiative therefore aims to broaden the range of voices heard in theatre and related media.
What happens next
Writers’ Block will begin allocating the flat to eligible writers, who will be selected based on criteria related to disadvantage and career stage. The scheme is described as a pilot, suggesting that its impact will be evaluated before any further expansion. No specific timeline for additional flats or further funding has been announced, but the involvement of multiple backers indicates a commitment to continue addressing housing barriers for emerging writers.
