Channel 4 ends Married at First Sight UK after allegations

On 5 November 2026, Channel 4 announced that the reality series *Married at First Sight UK* would not return to television. The decision followed two independent reviews after three women alleged they had been raped or subjected to non‑consensual sex during the production of the show. The broadcaster removed all five previous seasons from its on‑demand service and shut down the show’s social media channels. The show, which matches strangers who marry on their first meeting, has been a staple of Channel 4’s programming for a decade. The decision comes after a BBC Panorama investigation in July that reported two cast members had been arrested on suspicion of rape. The allegations prompted the network to commission external reviews.

Background

The BBC’s investigation, aired on Panorama, detailed three separate incidents of sexual assault involving participants of the UK version of the series. A single male suspect was detained for rape, whereas the remaining two complaints came from women who alleged they were sexually assaulted by partners they had met through the program. All accused men denied the accusations. Following the Panorama report, Channel 4 removed the programme from all streaming and linear services in May 2026. The broadcaster then commissioned two reviews: one by the law firm Clyde & Co and another by former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey. The Clyde & Co review examined whether the network’s welfare protocols met Ofcom’s duty of care requirements. Heggessey’s review assessed whether changes could strengthen contributor welfare. Both reviews concluded that while the welfare framework was largely compliant, there were isolated incidents where it was not fully implemented. The report by Heggessey commended the existing procedures as being comprehensive, meticulous and of excellent quality, yet it indicated that major modifications were necessary to deal with the reported events. Channel 4 Chief Executive Priya Dogra, who had joined the network a few months earlier, said the reviews cleared the broadcaster of wrongdoing but that the recommended changes would fundamentally alter the format. She stated that the show had “run its course” after ten years and that the network would use the opportunity to pursue new creative projects.

Why it matters

The cancellation affects a programme that had been a significant revenue generator for Channel 4. The decision also reflects the network’s commitment to participant welfare after the allegations. The removal of all seasons from the network’s platforms means viewers can no longer access the content on Channel 4’s own services, although international versions of the franchise remain available. The incident highlights the broader industry debate over safety protocols in reality television. The BBC’s Panorama investigation and the subsequent reviews underscore the importance of robust welfare measures for participants in high‑profile programmes.

What happens next

Channel 4 has confirmed that the already‑filmed sixth season will not be broadcast, and a planned spin‑off, *Second Married at First Sight*, has been cancelled. The network has not announced any replacement programming. The reviews’ recommendations remain in place, but the network has stated it will not implement them in a way that would preserve the current format. The decision marks the end of a decade‑long run for the UK version of the series, while other international versions of *Married at First Sight* continue to air elsewhere.
