Storm Boelo wreaks havoc across the UK

Storm Boelo struck Scotland and northern England over the weekend, leaving roughly 90,000 properties without power as of Monday. The Energy Networks Association (ENA) reported that sustained winds of 50‑85 mph were damaging power infrastructure, preventing engineers from safely restoring service.

The severe weather resulted in the deaths of two men whose lives were ended by collapsing trees. In north London, a young man in his twenties died when a tree crashed onto his vehicle, while a sixty-year-old man lost his life in Dumfries and Galloway after being struck by falling timber.

According to the Met Office, a yellow wind alert is in effect from 18:00 on Monday until 03:00 on Tuesday, covering the western coasts of England, Wales, and Scotland, as well as the eastern regions of Northern Ireland. A further yellow warning covers northern Scotland from 03:00.

Background

Storm Boelo is the second major storm to hit the UK in recent days, following Storm Austen, which also caused widespread power cuts. The ENA has said that the power network is resilient, but the CEO, Leo Slade, has called for a debate on how much more investment is needed to mitigate the impact of future storms driven by climate change.

The storm produced wind gusts up to 85 mph in Machrihanish, Argyll and Bute, and 84 mph in Stornoway, the Outer Hebrides, and Capel Curig, north Wales. Water inundated several roads, notably affecting a section of the A82 near Dumbuck Quarry in Dumbarton.

Why it matters

The loss of electricity service has caused significant interruptions for both residential and commercial entities. Marcus Reed, the operations director for the home-fragrance firm Wax Lyrical, reported that his Lyndal, Cumbria, facility and retail outlet would lack power until Tuesday night, compelling the business to refuse service to staff and patrons during the peak pre-Christmas season.

The ENA noted that 838,700 properties across the country faced power cuts during Storm Boelo and the earlier Storm Austen, highlighting the scale of the disruption.

What happens next

Engineers are working to restore power, but the weather continues to limit their ability to replace damaged poles and wires. The Met Office has urged people to stay indoors and to avoid walking or standing near buildings when outside.

The ENA will continue to monitor the situation and update the public on progress as the weather system moves on.
