During Storm Boelo, a 60-year-old male lost his life in Dumfries and Galloway when a tree collapsed on him. Authorities stated that the accident took place on Sunday along a small road in Mid Kelton, close to Castle Douglas. First responders arrived around 10:30 to find the victim, who was confirmed dead on the spot. The intense storm system delivered powerful gusts and torrential downpours to much of Scotland, causing widespread damage and chaos.

The storm caused widespread damage across the country, with more than 50,000 properties left without electricity. Wind speeds reached 85mph (137km/h) at Machrihanish in Argyll and Bute. In addition to the fatality, two women were injured in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross, after a tree fell on them. They were transported to hospital for treatment. Police have asked the public to avoid the Poplar Avenue area near Aberfeldy Footbridge, also known as the "bouncy bridge," following the incident which occurred around 12:50.

Background

A yellow alert from the Met Office covered the mainland and Western Isles, lasting from 21:00 on Saturday through to 21:00 on Sunday. Numerous flood notices were distributed throughout Scotland, with certain warnings persisting even after the storm's intensity diminished. Torrential rains caused inundation that forced the closure of key thoroughfares, such as the A78 Inverkip Road in Greenock, the A77 at Lendalfoot in Ayrshire, and various paths in Dumfries and Galloway. In South Ayrshire, law enforcement cleared at-risk structures in Ayr and helped 15 individuals trapped in a waterlogged caravan site in Ballantrae.

Transport networks were also severely affected. Network Rail reported that fallen trees and flooding had impacted tracks across Scotland, including areas near Dumfries and Partick in Glasgow. Overhead lines were damaged at Bishopton in Renfrewshire. Kirkwall Airport in Orkney was closed until Monday. Highland Council reported dealing with fallen trees on various roads within its jurisdiction. Utility companies reported significant outages, with Scottish Power Energy Network working to restore power to approximately 7,000 customers in central and southern Scotland. Within the Scottish and Southern Energy Networks zone covering northern Scotland, 47,000 consumers remained without electricity, whereas 32,500 others had already regained their power supply.

Why it matters

The storm has had a profound impact on communities across Scotland, affecting both safety and essential services. The loss of life in Dumfries and Galloway highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather events. The widespread power outages have left tens of thousands of households without electricity, disrupting daily life and heating. Travel disruptions on major roads and rail lines have isolated some areas and complicated emergency response efforts. First Minister John Swinney issued a message on social media urging the public to follow the latest safety advice and thanking emergency services and residents for their cooperation. Police Scotland warned that poor weather conditions and warnings were expected to continue across Monday and Tuesday, advising people to remain focused and vigilant.

What happens next

Emergency services and utility providers are continuing to work to restore power and clear debris from roads and railways. Police have indicated that adverse weather conditions are forecast to persist through Monday and Tuesday, requiring ongoing vigilance from the public. The closure of Kirkwall Airport is expected to last until Monday, affecting travel to and from the Orkney Islands. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor local updates and avoid dangerous locations, such as the Poplar Avenue area in Aberfeldy, where police have requested the public stay clear.
