In the early hours of Sunday, 1 November 2026, police officers from the Ogun State Police Command responded to a distress call reporting an armed robbery in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota. Operatives from the Onipanu Division, under the Ota Area Command, arrived at the scene at about 1:45 am. According to Police Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi (also spelled Babasheyi), the robbers opened fire on the approaching patrol, prompting a tactical response that resulted in the death of one suspect while other gang members fled with apparent gunshot injuries.
A subsequent search of the area yielded two stolen vehicles – a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry – and a large assortment of items believed to have been taken during the robbery. Among the items retrieved were computers, a gaming system, multiple handsets, a TV set, an electric fan, a radio, a wireless router, apparel, an OPay debit card, and various domestic articles. Officers additionally confiscated a homemade firearm, ammunition in both loaded and fired states, a Tecno handset, identification photos, an MTN subscriber identity module, two NIN documents, and money from the body of the slain suspect.
State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the officers for their swift action, professionalism and courage. He reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence‑led policing, proactive patrols and rapid response to security incidents, urging residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity.
Background
The incident forms part of a broader effort by the Ogun State Police Command to curb armed robbery and related crimes in the state. The Onipanu Division, operating under the Ota Area Command, has been tasked with rapid response to distress calls and intelligence‑driven operations. Earlier statements from the police highlighted the use of community reports to trigger deployments, as was the case with the citizen‑initiated call that led to the 1:45 am mobilisation. The recovered vehicles and items are being examined to establish ownership and potential links to other criminal activities, a standard investigative step noted by the police spokesperson.
Why it matters
The successful neutralisation of a suspect and recovery of stolen property demonstrates the police’s capacity to respond quickly to violent crime, potentially deterring future robberies in the densely populated Ota area. Residents benefit from heightened security and the retrieval of personal belongings, while the police gain evidence that may assist in tracking the remaining gang members, some of whom are believed to be injured. The incident also underscores the importance of community cooperation, as the initial distress call was pivotal in prompting the police response.
What happens next
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the ownership of the recovered vehicles and other items, and to explore any connections to further criminal activity. The police spokesperson stated that the command has stepped up operations to find the remaining fugitives, with special attention given to those who might be injured by bullets. No further details on arrests or prosecutions have been released at this stage.
