Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has formally declared that his administration is prepared to establish a state police force, a move he described as essential for enhancing security and protecting the state's expanding economic activities. In addition to this security announcement, the governor launched a social investment cash transfer programme intended to provide immediate financial relief to vulnerable households facing rising costs for food and transportation. The disclosures took place at a Thursday gathering held at the Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu, where officials addressed the 2027 budget alongside the 2027–2029 Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

Background

Governor Abiodun, who currently chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Committee on State Police, stated that Ogun State is positioned to embrace the initiative due to its growing industrial and commercial sectors. He argued that these expansions require a more robust security framework to safeguard investments and sustain economic growth. The governor highlighted that his administration has already taken steps to strengthen the state’s security architecture by providing operational vehicles, allowances, and equipment to security agencies. He further highlighted the expansion of personnel within the Ogun State Security Network, a body widely recognized by the name Amotekun. According to Abiodun, the combined strength of Amotekun and the So-Safe Corps is currently approximately 6,000 personnel. He emphasized that these efforts are ongoing to protect the gains made in the state's security sector.

Why it matters

The launch of the cash transfer initiative serves as an immediate answer to the financial hardships facing locals, a situation the governor attributed in part to interruptions in the worldwide oil and gas supply chain. Abiodun cited the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran as a factor contributing to higher oil prices and transportation costs. The programme is designed to cushion the impact of these rising living costs on vulnerable households. The initiative is set to commence immediately in Sagamu, where beneficiaries have already been identified and recorded in the state’s database. These individuals are expected to receive payment alerts shortly. The governor indicated that the programme will subsequently be extended to other areas of the state, aiming to provide direct financial support to those most affected by the current economic climate.

What happens next

The implementation of the social investment cash initiative is scheduled to begin immediately in Sagamu. Following this initial phase, the governor stated that the programme will be expanded to other parts of Ogun State. Regarding the state police, while the governor declared the state's readiness, the specific timeline and legislative steps for the formal establishment of the force were not detailed in the announcements. The focus remains on the immediate rollout of the cash transfers to address the urgent needs of vulnerable residents amidst the prevailing economic challenges.
