Resolution passed in plenary On 20 October 2026, the Ogun State House of Assembly voted to adopt a resolution that endorses the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill of 2026. The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide a legal framework for the creation of State Police Services. The resolution, identified as H.R. No. 194/OG/2025, was moved after the Ad‑hoc Committee on Constitutional Review presented its findings.

Committee report and unanimous support The committee, chaired by former Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, submitted a report covering 26 clauses and a series of proposed amendments to various constitutional sections. Oluomo presented each clause sequentially, and members of the Assembly voted in favour of every amendment. The motion to adopt the committee’s report was seconded by Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju and passed by voice vote. Subsequently, House Leader Hon. Yusuf Sherif moved to adopt the report as a formal resolution, a motion seconded by Chief Whip Hon. Omolola Bakare and also approved unanimously.

Political context and statements Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, speaking after the vote, said the Assembly’s decision aligned it with other state legislatures that have expressed support for state policing. She described the outcome as historic and indicative of the lawmakers’ and constituents’ desire to strengthen the security architecture of Ogun State. The resolution is to be forwarded to the National Assembly as a formal communication of Ogun’s position on the amendment.

Implications for security and development According to Daily Trust, proponents argue that establishing State Police Services would enhance the protection of lives and property, thereby fostering social well‑being and economic growth. The amendment is part of a broader national debate on decentralising policing to address persistent insecurity. While the resolution reflects unanimous support within the Ogun Assembly, the bill still requires consideration and approval by the federal legislature before any state police forces can be created.

Next steps The clean copy of the resolution will be transmitted to the National Assembly, where it will join similar endorsements from other states. If passed at the federal level, the constitutional changes would enable each state to set up its own police service, operating alongside the existing Nigeria Police Force under a coordinated security framework.
