Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has raised serious suspicions regarding foreign interference in Israel’s recent parliamentary elections. In a video statement issued on Wednesday, the Prime Minister asserted that foreign states had spent considerable sums of money to influence the outcome of the vote held on October 27. Netanyahu made these remarks while standing in front of an Israeli flag and a sign for the Prime Minister’s Office, marking a continued offensive by his government and far-right allies against Arab-Israeli politicians. The Prime Minister specifically alleged that leaders had accepted money from Qatar, an accusation that has previously been levelled against his own aides. He also cited the arrest of several individuals who were found with envelopes of cash on election day, which authorities described as localised incidents.

Background

The accusations focus on Ayman Odeh, a departing member of the Knesset and previous head of the Joint List, which is an alliance comprising three Arab-Israeli political groups. According to reports from several Israeli media outlets citing unnamed officials, the internal security agency Shin Bet is investigating whether Odeh received hundreds of thousands of shekels, approximately $100,000, from an unspecified foreign entity. Odeh is a veteran of Israeli politics who previously led the left-wing party Hadash, which forms part of the Joint List. This inquiry is part of a wider examination of allegations that Netanyahu’s Likud party engaged in external meddling in the electoral process.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara played a key role in the procedural developments surrounding the case. On Tuesday, she rejected Shin Bet’s demand to question other Arab political figures in the absence of solid proof. This decision angered Netanyahu’s allies, who have a history of disputes with the Attorney General. After receiving grievances, the Central Elections Committee reviewed 9,069 voting locations and declared that no grounds existed to doubt the validity of the electoral outcome. The recent vote saw the Arab community turn out in record numbers, a factor that appears to have heightened tensions between the government and opposition groups.

Why it matters

The Joint List has strongly denounced the accusations against its members, describing the targeting of Ayman Odeh as political persecution. In a statement, the coalition said it would not allow the vote of the Arab public to be delegitimised. The coalition charged Netanyahu with holding onto authority and declining to respect the choice of Arab residents, who cast their votes largely in opposition to his administration. Yair Golan, a left-wing figurehead within the primary opposition bloc, similarly charged Netanyahu’s faction with misusing its authority. He noted that police were arresting political activists without court warrants and that the Shin Bet was attempting to intervene in political matters. The political stakes are high, as Arab-Israeli politicians could potentially help main opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot secure the top seat if they form a coalition. Israel’s President Herzog has already accepted the certified election results and urged compromise to form a government, adding pressure to resolve the current political standoff.
