Agents from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prevented a violent theft attempt on the route connecting Kaduna and Zaria. The confrontation took place around 3:00 am on Sunday, in the vicinity of the agency’s post situated near Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Zaria. According to Sani Garba, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the intervention prevented suspected criminals from abducting motorists and other road users, with no kidnappings recorded during the encounter.
Garba provided details of the event to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Thursday. He explained that NDLEA personnel were alerted after one of the motorists managed to escape from the suspected robbers and raised the alarm. The armed suspects had blocked the highway when the victim reached the agency's nearby station. After being notified, NDLEA staff rushed to the area and exchanged fire with the individuals involved. This confrontation forced the armed group to abandon their operation and flee the area.
Background
The Kaduna-Zaria highway has a history of security challenges, having recorded previous attacks by armed groups that included the kidnapping and killing of travellers. A high-ranking member of the Kaduna Vigilance Service, who spoke to NAN in Zaria while requesting anonymity, stated that the unit had stopped over five distinct assaults at that specific stretch of road in October, thereby stopping the alleged offenders from carrying out their schemes. The operative confirmed that nobody was kidnapped during the recent incident and stated that the occupants of the abandoned vehicles had returned to their vehicles and continued their journeys after security forces intervened.
Historical context indicates that the route has been a target for criminal activities in the past. In December 2021, armed men allegedly obstructed the road and kidnapped over 30 travelers in the Zaria area. Additionally, in June of that same year, bandits were involved in attacks in the region. The recurring nature of these incidents highlights the persistent security concerns along this major transport route.
Why it matters
The successful intervention by the NDLEA underscores the ongoing efforts by security agencies to protect lives and property in the region. Sani Garba told drivers that the command is dedicated to assisting other security bodies in keeping the area secure. The incident highlights the vulnerability of road users to armed robbery and kidnapping, particularly during the night hours. The presence of abandoned vehicles, including articulated trucks, suggests that the robbery attempt targeted commercial transport as well as private motorists. The quick response by the NDLEA prevented potential mass abductions, which would have had significant social and economic implications for the affected families and businesses.
What happens next
After the event, videos circulating online displayed multiple cars, such as large articulated trucks, left on the road with their motors still on, while the people inside were nowhere to be seen. NDLEA operatives were seen inspecting the vehicles and documenting the aftermath. A uniformed individual in the clip, speaking in Hausa, explained that the alleged thieves ran away when they saw the arriving law enforcement officers. A different official could be heard instructing his team to collect the discarded items and load them onto a truck for retrieval. Garba advised citizens to stay alert and quickly inform security forces about any unusual behavior. He further encouraged drivers to work with security staff to enhance road safety, allowing residents to continue their daily routines.
