Shares in GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) experienced a significant decline on Wednesday, marking the largest drop among blue-chip companies on the FTSE 100 index. The stock fell by as much as 7% during trading hours before settling at a 5.5% decrease. This market reaction occurred despite the British pharmaceutical company reporting financial results that were generally better than expected. Investors appeared unsettled by specific elements of the report, including weaker performance in the vaccine division, substantial restructuring charges, and the company's broader outlook.

GSK, identified as Britain’s second-largest pharmaceutical company, disclosed that its pre-tax profit for the quarter spanning July to September fell by 19% to £1.9bn. Alongside this profit reduction, the company reported £318m in restructuring charges, with management indicating that further charges are anticipated. Although the overall financial figures met or exceeded some expectations, the combination of declining profits and rising costs led to the sharp sell-off in the company’s shares.

Background

The current financial performance comes under the leadership of Luke Miels, who assumed the role of chief executive in January, succeeding Emma Walmsley. Since taking office, Miels has overseen several strategic moves, including the announcement of multiple acquisitions. Notably, these include a £7.9bn acquisition of a US-based cancer specialist. Additionally, in July, the company launched a major cost-saving programme designed to accelerate drug development.

In the third quarter, GSK reported that its total turnover increased by 5% at constant currency rates, reaching £8.9bn. This growth was primarily driven by strong sales of medications for HIV, cancer, and lupus. However, the vaccine segment showed signs of strain. Vaccine sales decreased by 2% to £2.6bn. Within this category, sales of the shingles vaccine Shingrix dropped by 5%, while sales of the RSV vaccine Arexvy saw a sharper decline of 24%. In contrast, sales of meningitis vaccines rose by 12%.

A significant long-term concern highlighted by investors is the impending loss of patent protection for GSK’s blockbuster HIV drug, dolutegravir. This patent is set to expire towards the end of the decade. Once patent protection lapses, other pharmaceutical manufacturers will be able to produce and sell cheaper generic versions of the drug, which is expected to impact GSK’s revenue from this key product. In response to these challenges, GSK has established a goal to generate more than £40bn in total annual revenue by 2031, focusing on rebuilding its cancer business portfolio.

Why it matters

The decline in GSK’s share price reflects investor anxiety regarding the company’s ability to maintain profitability amid shifting market dynamics. The specific weakness in vaccine sales, particularly the 24% drop in Arexvy sales, raises questions about demand and competition in that sector. Furthermore, the £318m in restructuring charges, with more expected, signals ongoing internal adjustments that may continue to pressure short-term earnings.

Luke Miels addressed the restructuring, stating that the impact on the UK was 'relatively limited'. He also noted that the company was slightly ahead of schedule on its three-year cost reduction plan, which aims to save £1.9bn annually. Despite these assurances, the market’s negative reaction underscores the sensitivity of investors to any signs of slowing growth in core areas like vaccines and the looming threat of generic competition for its flagship HIV medication. The divergence between the better-than-expected revenue figures and the sharp stock drop highlights the complex factors influencing investor confidence in the pharmaceutical sector.
