The luxury cruise vessel MV Odyssey, operated by Florida‑based Villa Vie Residences, paused its three‑year, around‑the‑world itinerary on Tuesday in the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville. The decision came after the company said fuel expenses had risen dramatically, making the voyage financially unsustainable. At the time of suspension, the ship was carrying 203 passengers – the majority of whom were American – and 156 crew members, according to Cambodian officials. The vessel, which can accommodate up to 650 people, had been sailing for at least 755 days and was marketed as a floating residence where occupants could rent or purchase long‑term cabins.

Villa Vie Residences announced that monthly fuel costs per cabin, which historically averaged about $1,800, had climbed to an estimated $6,000‑$8,000 in parts of Asia. The increase was attributed to higher diesel prices following the war in Iran, which has constrained fuel supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. The company said it had attempted to mitigate the impact by slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, but these measures were insufficient to offset the surge.

Background

The MV Odyssey set sail from Belfast, Northern Ireland, two years ago on a voyage that promised passengers the chance to live at sea while visiting all seven continents. Villa Vie Residences promoted the ship as a permanent home, with suite purchase prices starting at roughly $230,000 and “villa suites” priced at $440,000. An interior villa could be bought for $120,000. The cruise model is among a small number of services that allow long‑term or permanent residence aboard a moving vessel.

Fuel costs began to climb sharply after the Iran war started in late February 2026. The average price of a gallon of diesel in the United States rose from $3.76 on 27 February 2026 to $6.52 by late October, an increase of $2.76, according to the American Automobile Association. The conflict has also reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for petroleum products, further tightening supply in Southeast Asia.

Why it matters

The suspension directly affects the 203 passengers and 156 crew members on board, many of whom have invested significant sums to secure long‑term accommodation. Villa Vie Residences said it is working to find temporary housing for the displaced residents. Some passengers have already left Cambodia on flights, while others remain in Sihanoukville awaiting assistance. The ship’s deputy governor, Long Dimanche, confirmed that the vessel is scheduled to refuel before a planned departure on Saturday, though no definitive date for resumption has been set.

The incident also highlights the vulnerability of niche cruise‑residence business models to geopolitical shocks that affect fuel markets. With monthly cabin fuel costs potentially quadrupling, the operator indicated that passing the full increase onto residents would be unrealistic, leaving the company with operating losses it could not sustain.

What happens next

Villa Vie Residences has not provided a concrete timeline for when the MV Odyssey will resume its itinerary. The company stated its focus is now on addressing the immediate needs of passengers, including securing temporary accommodation. The ship is expected to refuel before a tentative departure on Saturday, but officials have not confirmed whether the voyage will continue or be terminated permanently. Further updates are likely to depend on developments in global fuel prices and the broader geopolitical situation surrounding the Iran conflict.

The situation remains fluid, and passengers, crew, and industry observers are watching closely for any new information regarding the ship’s future operations.
