Pope appears in St. Peter’s Square On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance since undergoing surgery to remove a malignant tumour from his right lung. He stood at a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, where thousands of faithful gathered and responded with cheers, according to reports from CBS World and RTE.

Details of the operation The surgery, performed on a Tuesday, involved removal of the lower lobe of the pope’s right lung. Pathology confirmed adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. The procedure took place at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where the pontiff later expressed gratitude to the medical team. His surgeon, Dr Stefano Margaritora, told Vatican News that there were no clinical obstacles to the pope’s planned activities and that full recovery was expected within roughly ten days.

Message to the crowd In his brief address, the pope said the recent health challenge had deepened his empathy for those suffering from illness. He thanked the crowd for their prayers and support, noting that he felt their encouragement throughout his hospital stay. He also indicated that, with God’s help, he would gradually return to his regular responsibilities.

Upcoming travel plans Despite the recent operation, the Vatican confirmed that the pope’s scheduled November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru remains on the agenda. The itinerary includes multiple flights and two helicopter journeys to high‑altitude locations. Dr Margaritora affirmed that there were no medical reasons to postpone the journey.

Ongoing medical monitoring Histological analysis of the tumour and associated lymph nodes is still underway. Results will inform whether additional treatment—such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted oral medication—is required, based on the tumour’s genetic profile. No official prognosis has been released.

Public reaction Visitors to the Vatican expressed amazement at the pope’s swift recovery. A retired factory worker from Puglia described the rapid improvement as a miracle, while American tourists highlighted the significance of meeting the first U.S.‑born pope after his illness.

The pope’s appearance marks a symbolic step toward normalcy after a health episode that has been the first major challenge of his 17‑month pontificate. Observers will continue to watch his recovery and the outcomes of the pending medical tests as he prepares for his upcoming South American outreach.
