State governors in Gombe, Kebbi, Bauchi and Enugu have addressed newly deployed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members during swearing-in ceremonies for the 2026 Batch C, Stream II. The events, held on Thursday and Friday, focused on assurances of safety, improvements to camp infrastructure, and appeals for corps members to contribute to local development rather than seeking redeployment.
In Gombe State, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, speaking through Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Yusuf Abdullahi-Waziri, urged members to resist unnecessary redeployment requests. The ceremony took place at the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Amada. Yahaya stated that the state requires the expertise of the corps members to support growth in critical sectors such as education and healthcare. He described the NYSC scheme as a vital platform for national unity, integration, and reconciliation, bringing together young Nigerians from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The governor assured the members of their safety, noting that the state government is collaborating with security agencies to provide a conducive environment for the duration of their service.
In a parallel development, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State spoke to 806 recently arrived corps members stationed at the NYSC temporary orientation camp located in Basaura, within the Jega Local Government Area. Represented by Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development Nura Fingilla, Idris stated that the safety of the corps members was paramount. The governor credited the region's stability to the joint efforts of the administration, security forces, traditional authorities, and local community figures. The governor urged the members to remain security-conscious, obey camp regulations, and report any suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities.
In Bauchi State, the NYSC State Coordinator, Umoren Kufre, disclosed that 1,677 corps members, comprising 752 males and 925 females, were sworn in at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Wailo, Ganjuwa Local Government Area. The orientation commenced on November 4, 2026, and includes paramilitary drills, citizenship training, and skills acquisition. Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sports Bashir Yau, commended the members for their conduct and highlighted administrative improvements, including the renovation of hostels and the construction of a new multipurpose hall at the camp.
In Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah announced an improved monthly allowance for NYSC members, with payments expected to commence at the end of November. Speaking through Commissioner for Youth and Sports Lloyd Ekweremadu at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu, Mbah confirmed that details had been forwarded to the Accountant-General. The governor also detailed infrastructural upgrades at the camp, including water reticulation, new boreholes, reconnection to electricity, and the construction of new accommodation and an auditorium. Oluwakemi Awolola, serving as the State Coordinator, reported that 1,900 candidates had signed up for the program, a group consisting of 862 men and 1,038 women.
Background
The National Youth Service Corps is a mandatory one-year service scheme for young Nigerians, designed to promote national integration and development. The 2026 Batch C, Stream II represents the latest cohort of participants undergoing orientation and subsequent deployment to various states. Previous batches have faced various challenges, including security concerns and infrastructure deficits, prompting state governments to intervene with specific support measures. In recent years, several states have sought to improve the welfare of corps members to ensure a smoother service year, ranging from financial incentives to physical upgrades of orientation camps.
Why it matters
These interventions directly affect the well-being and productivity of thousands of young Nigerians serving the country. In Enugu, the financial increase aims to improve the standard of living for members during their service year. In Gombe, the emphasis on retaining members in their assigned locations is intended to maximize the human capital available for local development in education and healthcare. In Kebbi and Bauchi, the focus on security and infrastructure addresses the primary concerns of safety and comfort, which are critical for the successful completion of the mandatory service. The governors' actions reflect a broader effort to maintain the integrity of the NYSC scheme and ensure that it continues to serve as a tool for national cohesion.
