Egypt Court Orders Closure of Mada Masr
On 28 October 2026 a New Cairo misdemeanour court convicted Lina Attalah, the editor‑in‑chief of the independent news website Mada Masr, of running an unlicensed outlet. The judge imposed the maximum fine of 3 million Egyptian pounds (about $53,400) and ordered the site to be shut down and its equipment confiscated. Attalah was briefly detained by security forces after the verdict and was released only after paying the fine.
The decision came after a single hearing in which Attalah’s lawyers said the court rejected requests to review the case file or submit additional evidence. The judge also appointed a new lawyer to represent her, a move that was criticised by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) as a violation of her legal rights.
Background
Mada Masr was founded in 2013 and has been one of the few remaining independent news outlets in Egypt. It is known for investigative reporting on corruption, human rights violations and the influence of the military. Attalah has been a prominent journalist in the country for many years and has faced several legal challenges; this is the sixth case involving her and the outlet in six years, although none of the earlier cases had proceeded to trial.
The court’s ruling follows a broader pattern of repression in Egypt. President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi’s administration has been criticised for a crackdown on dissent since 2013, with tens of thousands of people, including journalists, activists and academics, detained. The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that 25 journalists are currently in prison, while EIPR counts 26 in detention.
Why it matters
The closure of Mada Masr removes a critical source of investigative journalism in Egypt. Rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have described the verdict as a “crushing blow” to press freedom. The case also highlights the use of licensing laws to silence independent media. The fine and closure are the maximum penalties for the offence, signalling that the state is willing to impose severe sanctions on dissenting voices.
The incident has drawn international attention. Human‑rights groups have condemned the trial as a dangerous escalation in Egypt’s crackdown on media. The ruling also comes only weeks after the arrest of journalists from the fact‑checking platform Matsda2sh, who were charged with belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
What happens next
The court’s decision is final, but the case has sparked calls for legal reform and greater protection for journalists. Attalah’s lawyers and EIPR have urged the court to review the case file and allow the submission of additional evidence, but the judge’s actions during the hearing have been criticised as a violation of due process. No further legal steps have been announced, and it remains unclear whether the ruling will be challenged in higher courts.
The closure of Mada Masr is likely to have a chilling effect on other independent outlets, many of which operate under precarious legal conditions. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with press freedom advocates calling for the restoration of the site and the protection of journalists in Egypt.
