Five people lost their lives after a head‑on collision between a Hilux van in Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s convoy and a private Peugeot 206 on the Minna‑Bida road near Gidan Mangoro, a community on the outskirts of Minna, on Monday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 11:00 am, with the governor returning from Bida where he had attended a prayer ceremony for the late Sagin Nupe. Victims included four male students from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and a young woman identified as Nafisa, a staff member of an NGO, programme manager at Labspace and founder of Wosh Mart Service Ltd.
According to eyewitnesses, the Hilux driver attempted an overtaking manoeuvre and rammed into the on‑coming car, which was travelling in its lane. The impact caused the private car to burst into flames, killing its occupants instantly. Three of the victims died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries after being taken to Minna General Hospital. The fifth fatality, a former local‑government council chairman travelling in the Hilux, died on the spot as well. Several other occupants of the convoy sustained serious injuries; one former Shiroro Local Government Area chairman suffered leg fractures, and other injured persons were transferred to IBB Specialist Hospital for advanced care.
Background
The incident took place on the Minna‑Bida highway, a major route in Niger State. Governor Bago had been in Bida for a religious gathering before the convoy set out for Minna. The convoy’s Hilux van, described as travelling at high speed, collided with a private vehicle driven by the aforementioned woman from Gidan Mangoro. Local resident Abdullahi Musa reported that the governor’s convoy was returning from the Sagi Nupe Hajia Aisha ceremony when the crash occurred. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector commander for Niger State, Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the accident but noted that FRSC officers arrived after the victims had already been evacuated to the hospital.
Police Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun of the Niger State command verified the crash and indicated that an investigation was underway, though he did not disclose the names or exact number of the deceased. Hospital staff at Minna General Hospital confirmed that three victims died on the spot and two more later died from severe injuries, while some injured were referred to IBB Specialist Hospital.
Why it matters
The crash highlights concerns over road safety and convoy protocols for high‑profile officials in Nigeria. The loss of four postgraduate students and a young professional has drawn attention to the safety of university commuters and the broader community. Injured victims, including a former local‑government chairman, required treatment at both Minna General Hospital and the IBB Specialist Hospital, underscoring the strain on state health facilities during emergencies. Doubts were cast on the healthcare workforce's ability to handle the emergency, following accounts that a doctor at Minna General Hospital voiced worries over staff shortages and was reportedly held by security personnel linked to the governor, though this allegation has not been confirmed.
What happens next
The Niger State police have opened an investigation into the cause of the collision, focusing on the alleged wrongful overtaking by the Hilux driver. The FRSC and police are expected to release further findings once the inquiry is complete. Hospital authorities continue to monitor the condition of the injured, with some patients still receiving care at IBB Specialist Hospital. The governor's itinerary was disrupted because the accident took place on the very day he was scheduled to participate in the launch of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council in Niger State.
